View Full Version : Surf the Alphabet

This was a game people in some of my classes would play when they were very bored, and then I noticed something similar on the forums so here's the hard version.
Basically, go to Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page) and search for anything that starts with the letter "A." From there, following only links in the articles, go through the alphabet up to "Z." The articles do not have to be related in any manner, but you cannot repeat a letter, and you must go in order.

Example:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apple
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Braeburn,_Houston,_Texas
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Climate_of_Houston
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2004_Christmas_Eve_Snowstorm (Appears as December)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/El_Campo,_Texas
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Federal_Information_Processing_Standard

etc....
(Note: This one dead ends)
I guess I should give a whole hearty attempt at the game I posted. :)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fourier_transform
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gaussian_function
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heat_equation
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Isotropy

Darn, I hit another dead end that won't be worth reversing...If you hit a dead end like the example, you must backtrack until you can continue. Like I said, absolutely no repeats and it must be done in the order of the alphabet.
Okay, now that this is a community game where we all play one large game of this.

Rules are:
1. You must go to the last article linked to search for a link within that article that begins with the next letter in the alphabet.
2. You may not repeat a letter, and it must go in the order of the alphabet (unless Rule 3 or 4 apply).
3. If you hit a dead end, backtrack one letter and link that article. Do mention you backtracked if you please.
4. If the the backtracking leads back to the letter "A," that user may choose another article beginning with "A."

Ready, begin!

PS
Anyone caught adding in a link will have their post nuked and possible ban from the Forum Game section (yes, we can do that). Modifying Wikipedia for a forum game isn't worth it, so we'll take this seriously.
You've had your warning, no cheating.

Quick question. Is this intended for one person to play or for the community to play together? If it's for the community, I suggest intentionally dead-ending will cause death. ;)

This was originally meant to be an individual thing, but I could see a community version working well too.

If so, I'll start:

Ran into a dead end, backtracked and found one that has a "C". Didn't go further than "C", though.

EDIT: Got down to "H" from that link, and there's multiple ways. Han Characters (http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/Category:Han_characters)
Edit the edit: got to "W" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Thad_Cochran

I didn't think anyone would do that... seems a little over-the-top, but you've made your warning.

Eastern Han Dynasty (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eastern_Han_Dynasty)

This is an amazing time-killer. There's almost endless ways to do this if you back-track enough.

That's exactly why so many people do this. :)

Found the worst possible case for this one. A page with a table that has links that start with every letter, but those links have the same table. :p

If you looked at Costly's original example (which isn't there anymore), he used a link that had the text December, but linked to a different titled article. So, they are completely valid.

Got off of it. However easy it was going to be to use that page, it's too cheap to make it fun.
