XForgery September Update (2 of 2)

Well, here it is, the second September Update. It's another big one, because I'm bringing out two new big features that you will hopefully really enjoy. Don't expect anything else big like this for a little while, I'm running out of ideas. ;)

On top of all of the big new things, there are a few smaller ones to make your time on Forgery easier. Most of which were taken from your suggestions, so these I know you will like.

I have some more time for this update, as it isn't being rushed out the door, so I'll jump back to the normal format. Hope you enjoy this update as much as I do.

Site Overview (Hey, could you give me a jump start?)
Again, there is still a more regular stream of new members coming in, and we are expecting more shortly as we get ourselves known within the different communities, and especially once Far Cry 2 comes out.

Until that time, I suggest that you help us in this area. Tell your friends, and anybody else for that matter, about us.

Another area that seems to be lacking lately is map posts. Please, do Forge and post your maps. Being a community based on User Content, this is important to us.

Site Updates (The big and the small)
Like I said, there are several additions and changes coming with this update. I'm excited for all of them, because they increase our usability and bring new things to the table.

Remember, with new features come possible problems. We can't predict everything that might go wrong, so if you spot something, please tell us.

I decided to make these more visual as well, so you will see some pretty images scattered throughout. While all images will be from the Default Style/Skin, Blak-Ice has the exact same things.

Here they are in increasing levels of awesomeness (based on my opinion only).

Filters Are Gone (Damn Straight!) (Wait........ Can he say that?)
Through some suggestions from some of our new members, and us looking more closely into the rules/laws behind such things, we decided to remove the filters. This means that now you can say all of those naughty words you need to say to express your anger. Please though, do not use them just to use them, excessive vulgar use will still be punishable if it is deemed offending to other members.

Map Statistics ()
You may have noticed, as some (http://www.xforgery.com/forum/member.php?u=27) of you have already tried to leak this information, that there are a few extra bits of information available for each user. Now you can find information on how many maps each user has submitted and their highest rated maps, both rated by the Review Team and by Forgery members.

This information can be found in two places.

1. Post "Dots"
Just click the second dot next to anybody's post, and you will get the info.

2. Profile Statistics
If you look in somebody's profile, under the Statistics tab.

Collapsed Posts (Peek-a-boo!)
If you go to any of the user content forums, any thread in those forums has a special feature applied to it. The first post, and therefore the focus of the thread, will appear on every page. This means that you don't have to have multiple tabs open or constantly navigate back for a single thread.

Some users have stated that, while this is a nice feature, it can get in the way of reading the new posts because you constantly have to scroll past the first post on every page.

From now on, this first post will still be available, but it will be collapsed by default. If you want to see it, you just simply click the un-collapse icon and it magically appears.

Click the icon and POOF!

Map Submission Fixes (Correcting our own mistakes)
Some people (i.e. One) had some issues when posting maps. It was partially me not checking for errors and partially a bug in the vBulletin code, which they have yet to admit to and keep denying.

These should all be fixed now and you map submit maps non-stop, hopefully without any problems.

Rules for Map Posts (KEEP IT CLEAN)
We will be enforcing some new rules on map posts, which, if you haven't already seen them, can be found here (http://www.xforgery.com/forum/showthread.php?t=428). But, just to drive it home, I'll re-post them here as well.

You must describe maps with at least 100 characters, preferably in well formed English, not 1337 Speak.
You must embed at least one image in the post. Meaning that you have to use the [img] tags to put an image into the post.
See this thread (http://www.xforgery.com/forum/showthread.php?t=346) for instructions on how to do this.
The thread title should only contain the map name.

Any threads not adhering to these rules will be locked and made invisible to the public until you are able to correct the issues.

There have been some other new rules added as well, but we will get to those later.

Homepage Access (Who needs the front page anyway?)
When hitting the Home button in the navbar, you were forced to go to the front page of XForgery (The one with the giant X on it) and then go to the desired game page. Now, there is a nifty new dropdown box that contains links to all 3 pages.

http://img517.imageshack.us/img517/6231/homewd1.jpg

The "Home" link in the dropdown will still bring you to that front page, while the other home links will take you to their respective games.

Now there's no need for all that extra clicking.

Game Finder (Bringing us closer together)
This is one thing that I've wanted to bring to the site for quite a while now.

There is now a forum available, here (http://www.xforgery.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=60), where you can post times/dates that you want to get online to play with other people. Or, if you want to find it normally, it is a sub-forum of Video Game Discussion. This forum is special though. It has some strict rules enforced, one of which is enforced automatically.

This automatic rule is that you can only schedule games up to 7 days in advance. This will avoid clutter in the forum. How is this rule enforced you might ask. Well, the answer to that my friend is simple. All threads will be deleted 7 days after they are created.

Feel free to use this forum for not only Halo 3, but any other game that you can get your hands on.

Map Search (For all of those games you are going to schedule)
This is the biggest, and best new feature. It took a lot of work and finagling, but it is finally running. There are a couple parts to this masterpiece, so I'll outline each one and point out the parts that you can probably skip over if you don't care about technical crap. I'm proud of this one, so I'm going to flaunt it as much as I can.

How it Works (The Basics)
The Map Search is based on a simple vBulletin principle, Tags. Many of you have used this feature to tag your video threads with witty phrases and random other uses. I decided to put this to much better use. The map search looks for threads with certain predefined tags and uses those tags to get the proper search results. Easy enough to understand.

Auto-Tagging (You don't have to do it by hand)
In the latest updates to the Map Submission forms, I added a little bit of magic. This magic takes all of the data you specify in the form and turns it into the proper set of tags to suit your map. These tags are then automatically added to your new map thread and therefore your map is instantly able to be found by the Map Search.

The tag types include Creator Name, Canvas, Supported Gametypes, Map Size and a Map Category if it applies.

Now, every map that is created from this point forward will have these tags automatically added. But, what about all of those maps that were posted before this new change? Don't worry about that either. I went through and added all of the tags by hand to every map out there. That's part of why this update took so long.

Tag Rules (There's always rules. And no, they aren't meant to be broken)
Because of the mechanics behind the Map Search infrastructure, it could be relatively easy to trick the system. Basically, if you went back and added a bunch of tags to your thread that covered all of the bases, your map might show up in every search. Don't Do This!

If you do this, we will find out, and there will be HEAVY punishment for such things. This is meant for the better of the community, and if you mess with it, we will mess with you. Now, I know there are assholes people out there that would try to get other people in trouble by tagging their maps with unapplicable tags. NOTICE: We can see who added every tag!

Again, if you mess with the system, we will mess you up.

Let's See It Already (Fine.......)
You can find the Map Search here (http://www.xforgery.com/forum/newthread.php?do=form_map_search), or from now on as a link under the Halo 3 Maps category. Here is what you will see when you go there:

http://img521.imageshack.us/img521/1971/mapsearchkp8.jpg

As you can see, there are fields for all of the available tags. You can pick a canvas for the map, map size, etc....

Also, a neat feature of the Creator field is that it will suggest names to you. So, if you can't remember how to spell something exactly, or if you are just lazy, it will give you some available names. See:

http://img521.imageshack.us/img521/7069/mapsearchnamesnr6.jpg

The one field that isn't necessarily self-explanatory is the one at the end, "Require All Supplied Information". This field basically says that you want only maps that fit all of the criteria you specified.

If you don't chose this option, then if you choose to search for Assault maps by Null Parameter, first you will get all maps that support Assault and were created by Null Parameter, but then afterward will get all maps that are either created by Null Parameter or support Assault.

Just give it a try, you'll understand.

More To Come?
I'm done typing about this right now, I'll add more information about the technicalities behind this later if people are interested. Otherwise, I might anyway. :D

Reviews (Where are they?)
I realize that it can be frustrating to submit your maps and not receive the reviews that you hope for. Just know, that the Review Team is working diligently to get these done, and they will be coming out sooner or later.

We apologize for the inconvenience that this is, but reviews are actually harder then they sound, especially when it comes to also grading gameplay. Please, just be patient.

Since we have had some occurrences of this lately, I am going to state this right now. If you ask to have a review done or ask when yours will be done, your map will be pushed to the end of the list. We will get to your map at some point. We aren't playing favorites, we are just reviewing.

Review & Comp Teams (Uncle Forgery Wants You!)
On another note, with the high number of maps, we are always looking for more dedicated individuals to join the Review Team. If you are interested, please take a look here (http://www.xforgery.com/forum/showthread.php?t=611).

The Competitive Team is also looking for more members. If you are interested in playing Halo 3 on a team, have a glance here (http://www.xforgery.com/forum/showthread.php?t=584).

Random Ramblings (What your mother never told you about XForgery)

This time on Random Ramblings....

A couple really random things, all related to new features here on the site.

One I just added so recently, that it actually isn't located in the screenshots above.

In the Map Statistics for each user, the number of maps submitted is actually a link that will take you to a map search for maps created by that user.

Second thing, since we are now supporting multiple systems with the dawning of Far Cry 2, we have added an additional field into each person's profile. You may now go to User CP -> Edit Your Details, and at the very bottom is a new field for your Playstation Network (PSN) ID, if you have one. This will also show up in your posts, right under the XBL information.

I hope to see you next time on Random Ramblings.

That's the end of the update, and it was way too big. Hopefully you enjoyed it.

Eh, I'm not reading this update since it's had most of the content done and awaiting public release for a while now... so, if there was something that you didn't tell me before, Parker, hit me up about it later on. ;)

"To join the review team, you must ask to review a map. Make sure you PM Thomas (http://www.xforgery.com/forum/private.php?do=newpm&u=1), Null (http://www.xforgery.com/forum/private.php?do=newpm&u=2), or Kenny (http://www.xforgery.com/forum/private.php?do=newpm&u=6) to ask if the map hasn't already been reviewed. If the map you chose was not reviewed, please review in these six criteria: Creativity, Aethstetics, Gameplay, Spawns, Overall, and any last Comments." - Shellshock

From what I understand from the thread and having previous knowledge as to how the review team works, you are to PM one of the following people listed above to check to see if anyone has already said they're going to review the map(s) and if you can review said map. After we give you the 'Okay' you complete your review and send us another PM with your review.

 Glad to see you're interested.

Yes, from my understanding. After we give you the 'Okay' on a map and you've finished your review you send another PM with the review.
