Oh, you're going to have bundles of joy with this. That's DVD format that your capturing device is making, and from memory, almost all conversion software that's free does not do DVD format.
However, what are you using to make the videos? Like Windows Movie Maker, Vegas, something Adobe? You might find that your video creating software will accept that format (like mine which is Vegas 9 Platinum Pro).
I'll take a look through some free conversion software and see if I can find one for DVD format.
Okay, I found some free conversion software. Pick your poison (they have some crappy reviews and then good ones)
Quick Media Converter HD (http://download.cnet.com/Quick-Media-Converter-HD/3000-2194_4-10787822.html) (Free, I haven't used before)
Any Video Converter (http://download.cnet.com/Any-Video-Converter/3000-2194_4-10661456.html) (Free, available paid version; I have used before, but DVD format only in paid version)
AVS Video Converter (http://download.cnet.com/AVS-Video-Converter/3000-2194_4-10629027.html) (Free but watermarked; paid for edition available; I own an older version and it works "well enough")

I used Pinnacle Studios 12 for a while, then decided to swithc to WMM, which I had to do some stuff to the system my because my capture card wouldn't read. But on both it came out at .avi. You should try to record in one of those then load it in Vegas.

Well, the first download option on that list is the program. Are you sure your version doesn't accept it? Your import media box doesn't show them (http://i47.tinypic.com/2q07zpu.jpg)?

Actually, for video conversion, use this:
SUPER Video Converter (http://www.erightsoft.com/SUPER.html)
It is the single most comprehensive video conversion software available for free, if you can navigate the site to the install file. It works wonders.
It does appear, though, that your files have been produced in the form of a DVD, and if that's the case, you may very well need to use DVD Decrypter (which can be found through either that site I linked above, or through Google).

That my good friend, is a very big "if." I thought I got lost in some matrix looking for a download link. This looks like a very interesting program and I didn't think about searching "encode," but I really want to take a look at this SUPER (can't help but say it) program. Thanks for that link.
Good luck to TrustierToaster.

Here (http://www.erightsoft.org/GetFile.php?SUPERsetup.exe) is the link to the downloadable executable file. I don't know why they hide it so, as it takes clicking through three pages to find (where the links are very well hidden within the pages), but it is definitely worth the effort. Maybe they want you to know what you're downloading before you download it?

I use SUPER too. It really is amazing. It took me a while to find it, I finally just found some blog about it and followed a link from there. It converts pretty much anything. I used it to convert like 30 episodes of Detective Conan (and set it to use English Subtitles) for a camping trip I had.

Bro, if none of these options work, try out downloading Nero, that should work.
It;s free, and it worked for me, but it has the longest download time in the existence of ever.

Haha, I'm in the exact same boat as you are, Toaster.

I've just tried super, it's confusing as fuck :( I did manage to get one of my clips on the computer, not sure how I can turn it into another format.

You drag the clip into the bottom tray ans select the output format from the top dropboxes. The other options along the coder change things if you want them to be specific, or you can just leave it the default way for whatever conversion you want.

so do I choose the output container (first tab) as DVD or wmv/avi?
EDIT:
nevermind, I got it to work. Thanks guys, and good luck to Toaster.
EDIT (again):
now it's saying that Vegas can't open the file because of error:0xc00d07e2 (message missing)..
