View Full Version : Quite Impressed
I've rarely had the chance to come down here, and look at how you gentlemen are doing, but I thought I should quickly mention how well I find you guys are doing.
Advancing to FC2 was a smart move. As Halo is epic and all, it is in due time that it will die out, and unfortunately, you guys just recently have been getting the halo public's attention.
FC2 has many qualities, including a huge fan-base craze, that you will be enjoying. The map editor being one, of course, but the gameplay/graphics are another thing that I'm yet to be discouraged about.
There was also a front page announcement I saw, with a template contest, today. Glad to see you are still working up contests guys. These will keep your people quite active (or so we all hope.)
Also, I've noticed quite a few site updates. This also impresses me, I'll go over a few things that pleased me when I looked through them:
Embedding youtube videos!
Woot, on so many levels!
New skin (Or style?)
Generally a good thing, except colors people post can get confusing from time to time.
Introduction Forum
Always a good way for newer members to feel welcome.
Glad you put this in the off-topic-esque forums.
Blogs
Glad you have these implemented. They are a great way for users to have something they feel they want permanently posted, without other users feeling they will get in trouble for necro posting or something of that nature (used to forgehub, forgive me...)
New bbCode
Strikethrough, Superscript & Subscript.
How can anyone complain?

Win:
You must describe maps with at least 100 characters, preferably in well formed English, not 1337 Speak.
You must embed at least one image in the post. Meaning that you have to use the tags to put an image into the post.See this thread (http://www.halo3forgery.org/forum/showthread.php?t=346) for instructions on how to do this.
The thread title should only contain the map name.
And, Ofcourse, since you're going to incoorporate FC2, you haaave to change the name (kinda)..."xforgery" isn't bad imo.
Attachments suck anyways. =]
Quick Reply is a win option aswell.
Though, with good, is always some bad.
General Chat, in my eyes, can have some serious conversation, and could get members to carry out some really intelligent conversation. Maybe not change the general chat to post-counting, but create a new sub-forum, where posts do count, and have it named "The Cafe" *shrugs* that's all I could think of, off the top of my head. Basically though, it would be a place where posts count, and serious conversation is strewn about.
The original page...ehh...Kinda could use some work...Maybe a new gfx, but in all sincerity...It's not the most attractive entrance to your new "xforgery."
The whole...Fh>Xforgery/Xforgery>Fh debacle. This is a consistently annoying thing in my mind...I have no problem with you gents, and I know the moderators, admins, & a good majority of the members, have no problem with forgehub. Though, on a regular basis, there is a series of posts here on your forums, that consist of "Forgehub did this, I got an infraction for lalalala" or "Forgehub is spamtacular" or "I love forgehub more then here" (I don't know...Just throwing possible names of threads/conversations out there.) I also recognize that it can't be easy for you guys to deter your members away from the fact that forgehub is a big, vast place full of a ****load of members, with lots of random bnet newbs who join, just to post there map, and lalalalalallaallla. But, I just want to point out, that you guys are here, not to compete, but to provide a new system of forums, with a whole, new community. I for one, understand that, and wish that eventually, your community will understand, as well. (For those who don't understand that last part, basically I'm saying, don't complain/praise forgehub here...Just enjoy the forum you are on, xforgery.com)
Featured Maps?

I assume you mean the X page? Yeah, that's more of a placeholder, I think Thomas is trying to do some stuff in Flash to make it nicer.
The whole...Fh>Xforgery/Xforgery>Fh debacle.
Very annoying. I try to delete most of the posts that are anti-FH, but I don't usually see all of them.

First of all, I would like to thank you for two things; one being compliments and suggestions given herein, the other for taking the time to actually read what we have been up to and taking the time to comment on it.
So, I guess there is a lot to comment on here, so I'll get started.......
These were our exact thoughts as well. We're all really stoked for the new FC2 Map Editor, and it just seemed like a natural progression on an already (almost) proven formula.
There was also a front page announcement I saw, with a template contest, today. Glad to see you are still working up contests guys. These will keep your people quite active (or so we all hope.)
We are attempting to continue to bring these out, to generate more community involvement. Which you can never get enough of (I think, anyway).
Embedding youtube videos!
Woot, on so many levels!
This is one of the things we were very excited for as well. And, if you didn't notice, we didn't stop there. Gamevee and several other video sites are available for embedding as well.
New skin (Or style?)
Generally a good thing, except colors people post can get confusing from time to time.
We are always working on something new to change up the visuals on the site, hopefully to appeal to more people's tastes. Sadly, this new skin/style had to be temporarily removed after the move to XForgery, because somebody (**cough cough**Woozy**cough cough**) made put in image urls in the form of "http://www.halo3forgery.org/...." instead of using relative paths, so they don't work with XForgery. Hopefully this will be back up soon.
Introduction Forum
Always a good way for newer members to feel welcome.
Glad you put this in the off-topic-esque forums.
I'm glad that somebody (from FH) brought up this idea. It has been a great place for people to get to know one another.
Blogs
Glad you have these implemented. They are a great way for users to have something they feel they want permanently posted, without other users feeling they will get in trouble for necro posting or something of that nature (used to forgehub, forgive me...)
We haven't made too much use of this feature yet, as most of us (me especially) have never done a blog before. And I know at least I feel awkward writing to people in that form. But, it is there, and we take use of it randomly.
I believe the one difference with FH here is the fact that our Blogs are closed off to those who are Supporters. We saw this as a draw to supporting the site for the reasons you gave. And we use the (very miniscule) proceeds from supporters to keep a majority of ads off the site and keep our very moderate server.
New bbCode
Strikethrough, Superscript & Subscript.
How can anyone complain?
Exactly! Althought Strikethrough seems to get the most use.

We decided that map posting rules were in order, when we started getting posts that broke every one of those rules.
Haven't had too much trouble with it since.
And, Ofcourse, since you're going to incoorporate FC2, you haaave to change the name (kinda)..."xforgery" isn't bad imo.
The name was a combination of what sounded good and what domains were available. Personally, XForgery was my favorite in the bunch anyway, but not everybody shared that opinion.
Attachments suck anyways. =]
Quick Reply is a win option aswell.
They especially suck when we hadn't set them up to be stored on the filesystem, and therefore took up huge amounts of database space.
I think that Quick Reply was a long overdue addition that was definitely needed. I use it all of the time now.
Now, onto the bad.........
This is very true, and something that I hadn't really considered too much. We had requests for a "Debate" forum, similar to FH, but I didn't see the point in having a separate forum dedicated to just debating (no matter how much I love to do it). But having a forum for more serious discussions wouldn't hurt things, my only question is where to draw that line between serious and casual.
The original page...ehh...Kinda could use some work...Maybe a new gfx, but in all sincerity...It's not the most attractive entrance to your new "xforgery."
We know it is plain, and we've heard arguments for both sides. Some people like it, some people don't. And as Woozy said, we're hoping to get something a little more high-tech/interactive and hopefully more visually appealing.
The whole...Fh>Xforgery/Xforgery>Fh debacle......
No doubt this is a sore spot for everybody. The fact remains that we can't really change people's opinions about either site, that is left up to them. As you said, we can only hope that they come around and enjoy what they have.
Featured Maps?
Where the hell are they? D=
This is something that is completely our fault. I tend to work on the back end of things, so I ignore the front end tasks more easily. This is something that has been "getting done" for quite some time, and definitely needs to coe to fruition, very soon.
I just noticed...There is a naughty word filter.
Fail. But whatever.
This is something that was brought up in the move to vBulletin. We were hoping to hit a more mainstream crowd, and therefore it may include even more minors then we currently have. So Minors + Naughty Words = Bad. Lately I've had second doubts about the decision, and it is definitely something to discuss more thoroughly.
I can guarantee that this post is way longer then most people will read*, and since you don't make it here too often, I'm not sure how long it will take you to read this. But, thanks again for the kind words and constructive criticism, we can never have enough of either.

The whole...Fh>Xforgery/Xforgery>Fh debacle. This is a consistently annoying thing in my mind...
Yes that is very annoying, but it has died down in the last couple weeks.
Meh, the debate forum (From what I've seen at fh) can get heated, and can split friendships/cause cliques, etc...Though, the "line" that you speak of is a thread to thread type of thing, it is up to you, and your staff to decide whether or not the topic of "My cat died" with the the post inside saying "I'm sad, hold me" is of a serious matter, could hold up a fruitful conversation, or is complete banter, that is unrelated to just about everything.
No doubt this is a sore spot for everybody. The fact remains that we can't really change people's opinions about either site, that is left up to them. As you said, we can only hope that they come around and enjoy what they have.
Ya, it's rather unfortunate, though, the only way things are going to change, is for members to recognize, through either self-realization, or one of their reads here. *cough*frontpagepost*cough*
This is something that is completely our fault. I tend to work on the back end of things, so I ignore the front end tasks more easily. This is something that has been "getting done" for quite some time, and definitely needs to coe to fruition, very soon.
No worries, y'all are new & fresh, I understand that it could take a bit of time to get enough maps to have a good enough one posted on the front page, especially when you have to please your current members by not posting maps that are from fh members (This is a complete presumption I have, whether or not it hold true, is doubtful, just bear in mind, I know that you must have that on your shoulders). Whether or not there is a map that is worthy of the front page, you also need to worry about future maps. You can't just have a single featured map forever, lol.

Those minors that you speak of play xbl...I think that is more then enough of a place for them to learn how to gut your mother with a 12" penis, then rape your 12 yr old sister, and mother just because...Sorry, some random person said all that while playing cod4 last night, lmfao...

I've put this off mostly so we can have a nice stream of maps getting featured, making a kind of line where we'd have the next 4 maps to be featured in line and if anything new and exciting were to happen it could come in-between those as needed.
Those minors that you speak of play xbl...I think that is more then enough of a place for them to learn how to gut your mother with a 12" penis, then rape your 12 yr old sister, and mother just because...Sorry, some random person said all that while playing cod4 last night, lmfao...
More of a legal thing, I don't want to have to put an age gate up in the beginning because some person with no life nor other way to spend money went out and sued us because we're promoting this site for both minors and adults. I can look to find away to work around the system, though, so we can have as little of the filters but still stay out of the doghouse in the long run. :P

Yup, looked up the laws for COPPA and we're in the clear for children under the age of 13, well... at least clear enough to not care. PG-13 movies are allowed to use the word "Fuck" once, and other stuff as seen fit, so everyone should be fine that the filters are...
Well, you probably figured that out. ;)
So the rule's changing from not working around the filters to not over-using words that were blocked. :P

While I agree that some of the blatant and uninformed complaining can be a little annoying, I feel it's nearly as insulting as Tex acting as if he is gracing us with his presence to 'come down here' to our lower level of existence. I mean correct me if I'm wrong but he basically came on here and said we shouldn't judge forge hub, then when on with a listing things that are wrong with our site? No...Not in the slightest, hate all you want, but with a discrepancy over something insignificant, such an infraction, or a -rep, it makes someone look quite ignorant. Whether or not one could prove that the creator is writing a thread to judge what is right/wrong about Forgehub, whilst being completely biased due to said insignificance is completely insulting to the user, as some people don't like hearing the truth/being proven wrong. I'm not saying that forgehub is infallible, that alone is ignorant. I wasn't assuming anything, you clearly said in your post that you didn't want us commenting on forgehub and then you commented on our community... While I appreciate your positive comments and my previous post might have been a bit harsh, I didn't assume anything that wasn't stated in your posts. But I certainly didn't get the 'assumed' message of "If people were to instead talk about what needed to be improved at FH and possibly give ways of doing so, that would be far different." from Tex's original post.

whoa, did you take off the profanity filter, Null?
EDIT: yep
When you said it was a negative aspect of our forum that we have a naughty words filter. I'm not putting words in your mouth rather drawing a somewhat obvious connection.
Meh...
I have already openly stated in my previous post I do find the posts that are complaining without reason annoying. I am merely defending the fact that you said you don't want us to talk about forge hub at all.
Alright, understood. You make a valid point. I did state "Just don't talk about Forgehub," or something of that nature. I retract that, may I be forgiven for my insolence?
I'm sure you do. But there is nothing wrong with criticism in order to improve our own site. Like it or not we can discuss what we don't like about your site in order to improve our own... like you said forgehub isn't perfect.
You know, you make a great point there...Except the way the people (Not naming any names here) go about criticizing though, is insulting. I for one don't appreciate it, and that was where the origin of that section of my original post came from. Also, with what I just said, is where the whole, "Don't talk about Forgehub," came into play...I just got done reading some banter like that, and was rather annoyed. Make sense?
I was never 'bitching' about forgehub. I don't really know where you are getting this? I did make a post about things i don't like about it but it was just to help improve this site.
I never said you, I guess I can see how you would think I was trying to point the finger, but that was a generalized statement, my good sir.

I'm glad I'm not your typical internet troll...Who would sit here and bicker with you for days on end...Because, I, for one, can admit, you are right. I was being hypocritical. Though, now that I've retracted my previous statement, and you've obviously pushed a "omg tex was wrong" out of me...Can we put this behind us? And recognize what I do mean is:
"If people were to instead talk about what needed to be improved at FH and possibly give ways of doing so, that would be far different."
Lastly, with that in mind, if there are any amazing points made here, on you gents' forum, please, make mention of it in Customer Service over at Forgehub. I'm not trying to detract from y'alls website, but I'm just saying, instead of discussing it over here, and learning it solely on your site, constructive criticism would be, without a doubt, welcomed and appreciated.

He didn't, I did. There's a difference between us and read the thread before making silly posts like this.

'Cept when we do have something more serious to discuss about a technical issue or something similar with forgehub that would belong in the Customer Service, who's post would the read and respond to first? Another 'forum noob' with less then 20 posts or you, a moderator?
I don't know about you, but in a larger community that has been known to have a decent amount of troublesome users, not everything that will be said to help the site will be taken seriously unless a more serious member says it. I don't like to be ignored and written off, so I don't really try, but given that I have less then probably even 10 posts on ForgeHub really makes most of my posts on the site seem like another 'noob' instead of someone probably worth talking to, at least for a little.
