View Full Version : [Solved] Map Categories

The way the map categories are set up are ok, but they could be better. The reason is because any map can fit in multiple categories. For an example I will use the map Grifball. That is a mini-game, but it is also on Foundry. The problem is that the bottom four categories (min-games, remakes, infection, aesthetic) can fit into the top three categories (Foundry, Non-Foundry, Legendary).
I have a possible solution to this. We should actually add another category. I'm not sure what it should be called. Maybe Complete Maps, Normal Maps or Regular Maps. Basically it is a map that plays with most of the gametypes. Now that there would be a new category, we would move the top three categories (Foundry, Non-Foundry, Legendary) into the new category as sub-categories. With these changes everything would only fit in one category.
This would make things work better, but why stop there? With a Foundry sub-category, it leaves Rats Nest and Standoff by themselves. Cold Storage also doesn't really have a good place. That is why would create a new Sub-Category called "Lone Wolves" that featured those three maps. Then we would have to change "Non-Foundry" to "Non-DLC", and everything would be perfect.
Edit: Actually if we added the regular/conventional section, we would not even need the sub-categories. We could just delete the Foundry, Non-Foundry, and Legendary section. The biggest problem with the category changes would probably be that someone would have to move all the maps in the first 3 sections.
If you don't feel like reading all of that, here is a list of how I think the categories should be
Conventional
Remakes
Aesthetic
Mini-Games
Infection
Race
I know there is probably a total of 1 race map on this site, but I think if we add the category, it will attract people who make them and encourage members to make them.

Cold Storage is considered a Legendary map, when it was released I made a statement saying that it belonged there. You rarely see any other Heroic Map forged on besides foundry... well, you hardly see ANY map forged on besides foundry, now.
I'll look more into this soon.

Yes, I know that, and that is the best place for it with the categories set up like this. It just doesn't really fit because it is not a Legendary map.
Edit: Well actually you could totally get rid of the sub-categories and just have the 5 regular ones.

Jusrt place the map where you see fit. If its based on one gametype ergo Grifball then its a mini-game if its set up for CTF also then put as Foundry.

Well thats because they're gametype(ish) based and then map based, though the map based area is usually used for competitve or really anything. and there is a lot of conflicting when trying to put a map in just one category.
I'd say either pick categories based off the map its on or just off the gametypes. and personally i like gametypes better since foundry tends to be overflowing.
and those categories should be competitve, infection, mini-game, and aesthetics and other. descriptions can tell that racetracks go in other (since we are lacking in that area).
i think that'd work a little better.

That's close to what I was saying. Except you used competitive maps and I used regular maps. If you meant the same thing as me then I like your name better. You also added an “other” category. That might be useful, but I don't think it would be used much (racetracks could go in mini-games).

alright, i know you guys were trying to drift away from FH's set up.. but i feel theres is better then ours as is.
the categories always have bugged me, but more so now as more and more maps are being posted.
i think we should have categories for: competitive maps, casual maps, aesthetics, and mini games. this covers every style of map, and if not we can always add a category which fits along with these 4.
if you use some knowledge put into this, most people look for specificly a minigame or competitive..etc. based on there likings of gameplay..
very rarely will one choose a map based on its canvas or where its made.
however, in order to implement these into the posts, (and i know forgehub did this in blue for MLG maps) but put a side statement on which canvas the map was made..
for Example:
Gecko Foundry
and so on.. i think since the canvas is already processed in the map post itself.. it shouldent be too hard would it?
lol it is september.. i smell a nice good update.

I don't like the idea of casual maps. I just went to ForgeHub to see how their map section compares to ours and they have a casual map section. It basically consists of infection and some mini-games. They used Tremors and Cat N' Mouse. I would consider those mini-games.

well say you have a bungie style map made for infection, and you have a few filters to make it sleepy time here comes zombies.. although you would have a gametype made also, i think this isnt a minigame as much as it is casual gameplay..
a minigame, is well a mini - game.. infection isnt unless there are alot of twists to it making the game feel like an "Out of halo game" and infection is yes.. built into halo 3.

Couldn't we just keep the infection category, and move the others to mini-games(where they belong)?

The problem with that is, well, who's to decide what Competitive and Casual when it comes to a map meant for regular gameplay? It's too opinionated.

That is another reason not to have casual. I think it is best to start with the regular maps and split the rest into as many categories as possible (without going crazy). It doesn't really matter to the creator of the map as long as there is a specific place for their map. It matters to people looking through the maps. More categories make it easier to find what they are looking for.

I actually like the idea of "Regular" maps, but that name just isn't suiting to it. Anybody have any better ideas?

Maybe Bungie Style Maps. (I heard other people use that)
Edit: I got a better one: Conventional Maps (thesaurus lol)
Also Formal, General, or Standard

I'm not going to guarantee any changes here, but I agree that one may be necessary. I can guarantee that these Categories will remain no matter what:
Remakes
Aesthetic
Mini-Games
Infection

Stock, Inventory, or Generic.
All of which do no good for the maps themselves though. :(

We've already decided that if we're going to cut down on map categories that we're not going to use the same set-up as ForgeHub. I don't like the 'casual' category, it's too vague and really is just minigames + infection.
The boards are going down today, we will definitely take a look at doing something about this while they are down.

Generic sounds good, although I'm sure someone's going to get confused there, as well.

To me, Generic just sounds so bland. Right now if I were to pick one it would be Conventional, but only for the lack of a better word.
