Labyrinth

written by amoeba

The cold, shallow, and narrow walls of the cave casted a luminescent gaze over the aspiring eye, he poked his hand through the crease in the ground and swerved his armed side to side, displacing some rocks and tumbling them down from the ceiling of the crevasse. He inched his feet closer, and held onto a durable feeling stone as he peered into the hollow, excavating its terrain.

Looking a tad deeper into the hollow, he became dizzy, nauseous in fact. He retracted himself from the hole and lay down. There was blood slowly seeping through his old century garb, he ripped it off and exposed the wound, gasping in fright and attempting to prevent the bleeding by lacerating the circulation in his arm. Realizing there wasn’t too a good deal of time, he tied a thick strap around the gash and tasked himself back to safety.

The man skipped over some rocks and barely edged his way up the small incline of the upper cave. He checked his strap to make sure the jewel remained secure, and pointed his flashlight ahead at the end of the grotto. Strangely enough, the entrance had been severed and caved in. Something wanted him here.

The man, Raphael Argus, was an archaeological paleontologist from MSU. He was fired from working at the University’s research division because he would rob it of its valuable gems and fossils in order for self benefit. When he was put on death sentence he quickly whisked away from Michigan and into the sands of South Africa, where it was known for being rich in diamond count.

He panicked mentally, and tried to break his way through the barricade. Not a single stone budged. It was obviously rigged as a trap to adventurers. Sweat dripped off of his face, and he screamed in anguish. Raphael became insane in this asylum – there was nothing. He crawled the path back to the crevasse, and secured his hand on a stone as he leaped down. Checking the gash, it was still bleeding heavily. His head was still throbbing as his blood began to thin, his cheeks puffing and his skin permeating.

Investigating the area with a swollen mindset, he found nothing except human remnants and what seemed to be a pirate hiding place. He sat, admiring the intricate natural design of the cavern, even when his consciousness was blocked by the pain. He placed his palm on his face and felt himself sweating blood, and at that moment he vomited, followed by coughing and retrieving air.

His time was almost over. It wasn’t karma – he tried to fool himself.

The pain was unbearable. He gasped for air, and tore off his clothes. The heat in the room was exhausting, he clearly had a fever. Reaching into his duffel bag, he found a clipboard with a paper and a pen on it. Taking the pen with his hand shaking, he scribbled “save me from this hollow” on the paper and left it in front of him. He dropped the clipboard and pen, his body shaking furiously. He examined the gash and wept at the thought of his death. “This can’t be happening…” He said, tears streaming down his face. He threw his hand in the bag a second time, and felt a tipped object. Obtaining the object, he realized it was a needle, packed with potassium chloride. Only a few milligrams left. He yelled, and stabbed the liquid into his exposed veins as he went into shock.

The Hollow is a new Conquest map, closing the gap between standard and revolutionary Conquest maps. Not only does the map feature a very cave esque feel - the gameplay is as promising as the pictures. Urban Myth has done a most excellent job tweaking and perfecting this map to its optimal state of satisfaction. Its not just another Conquest map that looks awesome. It is a brand new take on the whole Conquest genre of maps, just when you thought that nothing better than what is now could sprout of it.

Urban's intuitiveness lead him to the title of the first person to effectively use the spotlights in the crypt. These lights make for a very atmospheric feel and while playing this map, you'll probably be doing more staring then playing. There's a rare breed of map styles that make you feel as if you're not actually in Sandbox, or Foundry, or any other of the maps on Halo 3, it feels like an environment that the forger managed to craft through work and dedication. Forge was built as a map editor, and forgers like Urban see to it as their responsibility to break that foundation and create something surreal.

XForgery may have featured lots of Conquest maps, and all of them amazing, but none I believe have created such an amazing terrain style as this one. Be sure to congratulate Urban Myth on your way out and offer some good ol' encourage compliments in this thread, he deserves it for making a great map.

User Comments:(if you would like your name omitted feel free to ask)

This is now my favorite Conquest map of all time, both aesthetically and gameplay-wise. The atmosphere you created is amazing, and it doesn't detract from gameplay whatsoever. If anything, it makes the gameplay better. Most people who attempt aesthetic Conquest maps utterly fail, but you really pulled it off. Glad you took my advice with your approvements to the map. It really turned out for the best.

I saw the preview for this... it literally blew me away. It's pretty awesome using the crypt lights like that, extremely original and clever. Also the natural layout similar to Granite Basin it gives the map its own unique atmosphere and makes it feel more and more like a cave. It really captures a setting of the map, congrats on that. It's amazing aesthetically. I hope it lives up to everyone's expectations. I really look forward to playing this and will get back to you on it. Wonderful job with this.

Yo this will be featured because the gameplay is awesome and the feel, the look is just like a cave and its amazing. I really like the fact it really is a different atomosphere. So Urban I definetly tip my hat of to you. =)

Hell Yeah! This was what I was thinking when I first saw your "teaser" thread. The atmosphere looks downright amazing, and the gameplay is really fun I bet. Looks like a feature is coming your way. This definitely deserves it! Sick job man!

wow! truly amazing this is definitely a feature, how did you get the lights to shine in like that? I am blown awway at the aesthetics, boy just wait till gunnergrunt hears about this map!

Well, after the preview I tried to find what made those lights, and I must say, good idea to use the crypt floodlights dude! I love how this looks more like a cave than a conquest map. It will definitely make for some awesome matches on this map! GOod job dude, I applaud you!

Read on for an interview with the now renowned Urban Myth.

aMoeba: Before I begin, what does it feel like to venture into forging a new map style?

Urban Myth: I just loved how when I continued forging the map it just felt like I was breaking away from the generic maps out there.

aMoeba: Since The Hollow is such a great map - I can only assume its certified. The question still remains though, is it?

Urban Myth: I've never heard of that so i guess that's a no haha.

aMoeba: How did you get the brilliant idea of using the lights in the crypt?

Urban Myth: When I first discovered Ghost merging, I knew I'd have to improve my styles and make things unique and diferent. I thought of how I could change the atmosphere of a map, that's when I discovered the lights.

aMoeba: This is your first featured map here at XF. How does it feel?

Urban Myth: It feels great and I thought it would be my first feature ever. But now it's my second and that just makes it that much better.

aMoeba: The Hollow dominated the competition in the feature vote. Did you expect that?

Urban Myth: When I had people like Gunnergrunt, Multilockon, and Hadokenchild telling me what the thought of the map, I was pretty sure this would get featured somewhere. So honestly I wasn't suprised it won but I didn't expect the margine to be as big as it was.

aMoeba: Are there any major changes that had to be done to a previous version of The Hollow, and if yes, did you regret them?

Urban Myth: There were plenty of changes but it just improved the map so no.

aMoeba: The Hollow has incredible aesthetics that leave you in awe - after venturing outside of the map's boundaries I truly admired the work you put into the map. How long did it take to forge this map?

Urban Myth: Honestly, a week. Ghost merging was an easy this to work with

aMoeba: If there's a word of advice you could provide for forgers out there, what is it?

Urban Myth: Just to learn anything and everything you can, ask questions, get advice. That's the route I took.

aMoeba: Shout outs?

Urban Myth: Thank you all my testers. Also, I'd like to thank Gunnergrunt, Multilockon, and Hadokenchild for showwing alot of support. Oh and to all the people who love conquest, please follow Gunnergrunt's movement to et it into MM.

Thanks for the shoutout, I really appreciate it. As for the map, I'm still in awe at how bad it crushed the rest of the competition. Reflux is still in the hospital recovering for god sake. :D

Good God this is the best featured map thread yet! I just love the detail you go into aMoeba, and the video was the icing on the cake. Great map Urban, it was well deserved! Congrats, and good luck on your next projects!

At the very least, this is a well deserved feature. I'm so glad that this won the Feature Vote, and I'm not upset in the least that this beat my map in the vote.

Urban knows all too well how I feel about this map. It's the single most unique map I've seen in quite some time. While other maps aesthetics try to force you to "pretend" you're somewhere else, The Hollow's aesthetic style has unfamiliarity in spades. The once proud ranks of elite maps can only watch slackjawed as The Hollow knocks their lunch trays out of their hands, gives them atomic weggies, purple nurples, swirlies, and knocks up their sisters. Good job Urban, unquestionably deserved.

This is one sexy map. I downloaded and looked around and I can't wait to get a game on this map. Not suprised that this got featured. It's so pretty.

When you revealed this map to everyone I knew this was going to be an instant feature due to the fact that innovation and sexiness is rarely passed up around this community. Not only that, but you took it a step further by doing something no one ever thought of doing before and pulled it off in a huge way. Your map join the ranks of Sahara of Snow, Rock Solid, Frailty, Messiah, Gold Rush, Dunescape and Artifacts as maps that set the bar on what makes a great map here. Congratulations on your feature Urban and hopefully your next map will raise the bar even higher.

I thought I might actually dedicate a post to this, I'm sure many of you skipped over aMoeba's story, but I highly suggest you read it. It's actually of very very good quality.

I only caught the last paragraph =P but that was good. I LOVE THIS MAP! Ever since I showed this to like 20 people on my friends list, it become encrypted into my hard drive. The aesthetics are so amazing and you really did achieve that new feel for the environment. Great map, bad grammar (fix that please, or maybe Mozilla is being a jerk), a bow to you.
