In the begining there was the ps2 and then came the Xbox and we were happy with it came fusion frenzy, munchs odd world, and a game called Halo.
I have had this discussion at Gencon and got some interesting results and just want to share my point of view and see what you might think. If your a halo1,2,and 3 player or just jumped on when Halo 3 came out, I want to hear your oppinion
What makes the halo serious so worth coming back to...what makes this game such a solid comunity... why was this game so potent that it kick started the MLG?!
Ive heard all kinds of things but I have my own opinion and it comes in three parts. Controls, 4 player+, the master chief...
First off the controls allowed, not for the first time, the ability to look any direction on the x or y axis. the way alot of games on the N64 worked is you had to move a finger from wherever to use the Dpad to look around and the ps1 and ps2 had alot of games where you had to stop and look around. And where other games did feature similar controls they seemed clumsy. As a matter a fact games like Red Faction in my opinion should have made it and had the makings of a great game.
Halo was one of the first games to make a big deal about melee and even had a main button dedicated to it. "B".
The xbox pitched its add "its fun to play together" when it was released. And, halo really supported this it was the 1st first person shooter on the xbox council. So alot of golden eye, red faction people started playing and they were hooked. You could play 4 people at a time. This was possible on the n64 but the graphics were so much better and you did get disoriented as often looking at square and repetitious graphics. And you could play 4 player on the ps2 but you had to buy a special splitter and it didn't always work for all games.
On top of that, there was system link. The ability to play with 15 friends and bust sculls in a battle royal. This I think was just icing on the cake. And it led to the normal people lan party.
When Doom was out some of us nerd used to have lan partys. But thats beside the point
Finally there is Master Chief Petty Officer John 117 an enlisted level 9. He is a faceless warrior. Hes to cool to need a hot girl, and because he has no face he is timeless! You could easier then in any other game imagine yourself as him. He never panics never backs down and is the earths last hope. In his career he destroyed a ring hundreds of thousands of miles wide destroyed a starship with a bomb that he road unassited through space, and killed a race of ten of thousand of covenent with nothing more then the guns he scavanged for.
Needless to say there are so many reasons that the halo community is so tight...is so large and I only mentioned Halo 1 for the most part. We just got bigger and stronger with Halo2 and Halo3.
But I want to hear what you think makes Halo the most played game on XBL. And such a strong community.
