UPDATED!
After nearly three hours of backing up the entire site, I ran out of time to contact the Billing department by phone. They closed a mere 7 minutes before I called. Getting all of the information and data ready for this move took much longer than I had anticipated. :(
Downtime will occur again on Tuesday, September 8th, 2009 beginning at 5:00 PM EST unless further corrected.At any time the boards go down, you can now check http://xfdown.blogspot.com/ to see if it's from us or to check the status.

Unfortunately, we have to downgrade our server significantly due to lack of funding and I do not know when the boards will be back up (though, it should be the same evening). The server and boards will be down starting 5:00 PM EST on 9/4/09.
For those of you that want to help out monetarily, you can become a supporter. More information:
Supporters* (The Helping Hand of XF)
Supporters were mentioned above, so I'll give you a quick overview of what it means to be a Supporter.
Supporters are those who help out the Community in a positive way, and there are many perks to being a Supporter....
Pretty new Color for your name
User-Assigned Custom Title (instead of something like "Recruit")
Your very own Blog (http://www.xforgery.com/forum/blog.php)
Access to the Supporter Lounge
And a little extra say in certain items, like the initial vote for Featured Maps, discussed above.
There are several ways to get Supporter. You'll see it given away as prizes for competitions, if we see you as deserving in some other way, or if you don't want to wait and leave things to chance, you can give monetary support.
Basically, if you give $20 USD you will get 1 Year of Supporter Status, which is a lot more than the 1 or 2 months you'd get from winning a contest.

So, what does this mean for us? How much does it cost to maintain the server monthly?
We will be seeing increased loading time and all of the fun features that come with a downgraded server, but it's not the worst it could be.
Currently it's costing $125 a month and we're dropping it down to $25 a month, which is much easier to manage and pay for if we don't get any new supporters (we have had months where nobody wanted to give love), donations, ad revenue, etc.

Again, I don't know when they'll be back up but it should be within the evening. It all depends on our hosting company. Last time that I had to take downtime like this I got the opportunity to skip school, but being so early in the school year that's out of the question and this needs to happen soon.

Not quite. AZN FTW was giving is $100 a month for our server, then he got banned and stopped making payments. I don't blame him, I wouldn't pay for something I'm never going to use.

Yes, it is, but we haven't gotten any new paid-for-supporters in months. :(
So basically, with the downgraded server, it will be very slow and no new features can be added to the site?
We can still add new features but we will be aware that big updates will cause more lag and thus making the site less attractive. I personally hate sites that take more than 5-10 seconds to load.
You'll get my support at the end of this month. However I can't do it alone.
Needs moar supporters.

Theoretically, yes. Or we could bring ads back to normal members, like it used to be, and make no ads be a perk of having Supporter. That would generate more ad revenue and give more perks for buying Supporter.

But on a serious note, I wouldn't mind the Ads idea. If I was a normal member it wouldn't matter to me unless they are in a really annoying place. But off to the side or at the bottom of the page I wouldn't care at all.

I was thinking this as well. If ads would help, and could be fitted nicely ascetically into a skin, then we should go for it. They're not all that bad.

Wow really, sadly, no one gives a damn. You yourself aren't currently helping out with funding, people like myself had to get new jobs that don't pay as well because we're in college, already paying thousands of dollars to stay there.

See, I know you make way more money than me. I'm not saying I make a lot, in fact I make below minimum wage. I'm also sixteen, that's why I said that. I don't have to spend it on things like a family, food for said family, etc, etc. Most people on this site are closer to my age than yours. That means most should have a good bit of pocket change laying around.
Would I give money? Yes. I thought about it, and I decided it would be possible for me to pay for 3-6 months for the website right now, at the new price per month. I was actually going to ask you, or Thomas, if there was a way I could mail it to you so that you could use it.
I still could, but I doubt that's a legitimate way to support the site.

Currently, I haven't received anything from Google, who we get our advertisements from. I don't see a penny of it until the money goes over $100 and it's based upon how many page impressions and CTR (Click Through Rate). However, we have only had one advertisement from Google and it was removed from registered members a while back, but looking at the statistics we gained a more steady income from showing it everyone who didn't buy supporter than now.
We could throw the advertisements on a skin for those that don't mind them and want to help but that only helps for the page impressions, we get more money when members click on an ad (DO NOT start to just click ads so we *benefit* from it, I don't want to get my account in trouble). I'll still have to mess around with some of the ad locations and definitely add more to the site.

I'm not quite ready to have to beg you guys every month to keep the server up. I'd much rather downgrade for now and raise the money for three or so months in advance so we know that when we come back to what we have now, we don't need to worry on a monthly basis and give ourselves a cushion to keep raising more money.
So Thomas, what's the goal for a "good cushion" and how much have we raised since this announcement? That way it can give people who are willing to donate an idea of how much we need to cover and if we can get a group of several people donating (as per Boston's idea), then we can figure out how much we need to chip in.
RST - Credit Card =/= Giving Money
See, I know you make way more money than me. I'm not saying I make a lot, in fact I make below minimum wage. I'm also sixteen, that's why I said that. I don't have to spend it on things like a family, food for said family, etc, etc. Most people on this site are closer to my age than yours. That means most should have a good bit of pocket change laying around.
Would I give money? Yes. I thought about it, and I decided it would be possible for me to pay for 3-6 months for the website right now, at the new price per month. I was actually going to ask you, or Thomas, if there was a way I could mail it to you so that you could use it.
I still could, but I doubt that's a legitimate way to support the site.
Sounds like you have a suggestion to help raise money for the site. Care to enlighten us?

So Thomas, what's the goal for a "good cushion" and how much have we raised since this announcement? That way it can give people who are willing to donate an idea of how much we need to cover and if we can get a group of several people donating (as per Boston's idea), then we can figure out how much we need to chip in.
For me, a good cushion is at least two months in advance, preferably three. We currently have $74.48 on the PayPal account that pays the bills and only you, Xylom, and Zackj191 have donated or became a supporter since the message was originally posted.

The story of our server..........
In the infancy of XF, we lived on a very cheap server, and things were good.
One day, AZN FTW showed up....
AZN: "Hey guys, I'm here to save the day and help you grow."
Thomas and Null: "YEY!"
AZN: "But if we're going to grow, we'll need a better server. I'll pay for that!"
Thomas and Null: "YEY! Here's a good one for $25/month."
AZN: "If I'm going to pay, I'm only paying for the best. Lets get a Dedicated Server!"
Thomas and Null: "That's $100/month, are you sure?!"
AZN: "Of course I'm sure, only the best for XF!"
Thomas changes our server to Dedicated.
This includes an additional $25/month charge for an unnecessary upgrade* that got carried over from our old server, making it $125/month.
Thomas tells nobody about the extra charge, and does nothing to cancel the extra charge.
Every Month....
AZN: "Here ya go Thomas! Here's $100 for the server. I'm sure glad I'm paying for all of this!"
Thomas: "Thanks AZN!"
XF: "Thanks AZN! You're the man for taking care of all of that for us!"
Thomas pays for the server with the $100 from AZN and the other $25 comes out of the Supporter money.
Until the Supporter money runs out, then, instead of fixing the issue, he continues to pay the $25 out of pocket.
Later That Year....
AZN: "Hey Null, please ban me for undisclosed reasons."
Null: "Okay...."
AZN is banned.
Thomas: "AZN isn't paying for the server anymore, we're fucked!"
Null: "That's fine, we can downgrade the server to a lower cost one and pay with the Supporter money."
Thomas: "Well, you see, I kinda used it all."
Null: "We've had at least 8 people pay for Supporter, so that's $160, plus I gave $100 in the beginning that you said you never used so that's $260. Even if you spent some of that on features, like the Blogs, you'd have a lot left!"
Thomas: "Yeah, I paid extra for the server because they carried over some upgrade and I didn't take it off. I used the Supporter money to pay for that, but it's okay, because after that was gone, I paid for it with my own money!"
Null: "....."
Thomas: "Hey XF! AZN is gone, we're gonna have to downgrade the server!"
XF: "GASP!"
Thomas: "We need your money to help pay for it; and while I'm at it, let me give you false hope that we can keep the dedicated one."
XF: "OMG! We're gonna lose our server! Lets raise all kinds of money to help!"
Thomas: "Keep it coming guys, if we want to raise enough money to blow on a few months of a dedicated server, instead of funding a downgraded one for years, then we gotta get a lot more!"
XF: "OK guys! Lets scrounge through everything we own."

I do feel your pain about the new guys, too, but that's how Nullz sees 'the community' and fighting with him about what I think is right makes me the bad guy. Hell, when I mentioned to him that we're running out of money for the server because of him banning AZN he put some blame on me.
*If 50 sites can run on a single server with dual processors, I can promise you that our 1 site can run as the only site on a single processor.
Well, I still want supporter, and this has given me a raisin to actualy pay. plz accept my 2.50

If I didn't care and didn't like any of the 600 people that have been new (I used the term loosely) then I wouldn't have said anything and would'nt have been paying to keep the site up. However, I'm not going to argue with you about it. To keep the site up we need this, now, and your paraphrasing (imo) blows.
Null, if you have issues with me then we can take this elsewhere, but right now the server is under my name with my contact info for me to deal with. I'm still going to go through with the downgrade.

I'll probably start paying monthly for supporter if it makes a difference. When I paid I wasn't expecting to keep our original server, I was just like here's some money, it's Xforgerys now. What does the extra money go to anyway? Just builds up until we can spend it on something?

After nearly three hours of backing up the entire site, I ran out of time to contact the Billing department by phone. They closed a mere 7 minutes before I called after getting all of the information and data ready for this move. :(
Downtime will occur again on Tuesday, September 8th, 2009 beginning at 5:00 PM EST unless further corrected.

Yeah, the downloads took an extreme amount longer than they did last time that I downloaded the entire site. :(
However, on the 8th, I'll just be downloading new files, so it will be much faster. :)

For those worried about loss of features, it's really simple....
Don't be.
The dedicated server was massive overkill for what we really needed. A $25 server is all we really need so don't worry about loosing anything or the site slowing to a crawl. Of course I'm no official word on this, but it is common sence and null has said it several times. So if you were thinking about leaving because the site will no longer have lots of neat features, don't be so hasty.
