welcome to weekly debate!
every saturday i will post anothere debate, and if i can, i will get an mod to lock the old one.
This Weeks Debate:Religous Problems with Video Games
There are many games that for some reason people have religous reasons for disliking or disaproving of, i am not trying to offend you for religion, but many of these reasons i see, i just really dont understand. two of the most affected by these are the series of pokemon and Yu-Gi-Oh! though i can almost understand yugiohs, (halve the cards have demon in their names) but pokemon i do not, unless im missing somthing, i beileive many deep christains can agree to the stupididty of one thing i read on a long ant-pokemon rant: (after describing anemes charactors) not very godly personalitys huh? i beileve this was not a smart accusation as not all charactors in the bible are godly, and no human is actually able to be. discuss this matter

No problem, we can lock it when requested, just send one of us a PM.
As far as Religion and Video Games goes, I think the two should stay separate and for the most part I don't ever see a reason that Religion should have a problem with a fictional work based in a fictional world with fictional characters.
The one game I could see having some form of derogatory tone behind it, Assassin's Creed, with plenty of actual religious references and such throughout, I have heard nothing about when it comes to this game.

I had finally gotten the game of my dreams.
The game was Halo: Combat Evolved. My parents had been so nice as to Bundle this game with my Halo edition Xbox. Locked in my room, I sat down and starting grinding away at the story. By the time i was starting my beach assault on The Silent Cartographer, My parents were throwing a christmas party for the family, and my grandmother knocked on my door. I opened it, and she handed me my present. Before I opened it, she introduced me to her friend. He was a Priest from her Church, and he wanted to meet me. He asked me what I was playing, and so I explained the story of the game so far with all the backstory as well. After I finished, I said the game threw you into the shoes of a bionic soldier known as Master Chief, but the alien Covenant called him the Demon.
At this point, he stood up and screamed" You Satanical Bastard!" and slapped me across the face. He then took out a mallet, Smashed my $250 dollar Xbox to pieces, and stormed out of my room to crash the party in the kitchen by throwing all of our plates to the floor.
As you can imagine, my heart was shattered.
I managed to pull Halo:CE out of the half open disc tray, it didnt suffer a scratch.
My parents bought me a new Halo edition Xbox, and demanded that the priest pay for the damages. The Churches senior priest promptly fired the man, banning him from the church.
He also helped my parents out by paying the damages. But that day will forever live in my mind.
My point is is that sometimes one christian will go out on a limb about an issue, and that issue may be just fine with other christians, but not for that one person. Ive seen other people bring Yu-Gi-Oh and pokeman up in our church, and massive arguments break out because of it. I have friends there who arent even allowed to watch TV because of religious problems.
Personnaly i think its a bunch of bull, but others have their own opinions.
Nobody is ever going to win this argument, but i hope somebody has the guts to draw a line in the sand, and let each side do whatever they want with their lives.
Cheers!

Coming from a highly religious family, there is a lot of un-warranted discrimination towards some video games from the Chirstian and Catholic side. My cousin's a Christian, and he said that Pokemon were basically mock-magic, as if the people that came up with it were Pagans. The whole thing really is a bit over-the-top.

My problem with religion is solely with zealots. I hate religious zealots. I'm not talking about highly religious people either, I'm talking about the type of people who are like, "If you don't have the same religious beliefs as I then you are wrong and should be struck to the ground."
It's often these people who wave there fingers videos games and movies. It's like, just because these people like their religion a little too much, everyone must. For example, the whole "Golden Compass Issue ("don't watch it, it's anti-christian" my ***)."
Back on the topic of video games, I don't understand how the two groups of Pokemon and Yugioh could be targeted. There have been tons of games involving demons, the devil, etc. that have never been called out (to my knowledge). People really need to get there facts right before going off and ranting about things like these.
I remember some zealots-atheists were complaining about RTS's, because you control a 'god-like' character in the sky.
Complete bullcrap.

Zealot-Atheists? That's an oxy-moron statement on its own, no offense. Atheism isn't a religion, so you can't really be a zealot. And I've never heard of anyone complaining about controlling a Godlike character in an RTS...

Zealot-Atheists?
They exist, trust me. Some religious people try to tell you about there religious beliefs, zealout-atheists do the same: they try to convince you that all religions are false and anything that implies God-like characters (take RTSs, for example) offend them.
Maybe I'm getting the name of the religion wrong or something.
Ridiculous, huh?

I know that Nihilists can be pretty mean about religion, but Atheists... Well, the only time I've ever seen an Atheist be a "zealot" was when a person of another religion, namely Christians, tried to convince them that there was a God, or something along those lines.

There is some content in games that is directly against some religions, but I think the real issue is how people interpret the games and their "deeper meanings" (if there is one). I think some people interpret things in games as trying to force the game creators beliefs on others, when really that's exactly what their doing themselves.

Best story ever. I was laughing most at the satanical bastard part the most lmao. Anyways my friend isnt even aloud to play Zelda or pokemon since his mom is so religious. I honestly dont see how pocket monsters are demons. Like pikachu will kill a man aww look how cute he is. On a off-topic note my mom thinks the grunts in Halo:CE look like alien flower pots. lululul

I say I say any religious or nonreligious zealot-esqe fanatics should stay out of games unless its a game designed for them.

A lot of times I've noticed how much miss-communication can happen because you cannot always hear someone's tone of voice, you cannot see them gesticulate while they speak, you cannot know how serious one matter is over another; this doesn't change when it comes to video games.
Basically, I think that they shouldn't have to worry about a particular game, one way or the other, but if their religious views are directly offended, though, that's a different story.

So, should I get rid of the Giant Cross Kronos made outside my map?

Ummmm.... no. Atheism is a religion. Agnosticism is the lack of a religion.
Basically, like all things that have to do with religion, I don't care what you think so long as you don't force it on me. If you don't want to play games for religious reasons, fine. Just don't make me stop playing it for your religious reasons.

Atheism is not believing in a God: The focal point of the majority of religions is a central God or multiple gods. Agnosticism is moreso a point of view, really.

Atheism is a religion because it is based on belief - that there are no Gods.
Agnosticism is not a religion, it is the lack thereof.

Agnosticism isn't the lack of a religion: That's Nihilism. Agnosticism is a varying belief: I know Agnostics that believe that there is no God, and there was never a God. I also know Agnostics that believe there is no current God, but that there once was a God, and that he created Earth and the beings on it, and then left. Agnosticism, as I said is a varying point of view, but not a religion. Anyways, not the topic for this discussion.
