View Full Version : [Solved] A Three Word Limit Rule
Shell

To help combat the small amount of spam that currently exists, I think there should be a three word limit on posts. Basically, if you haven't written at least three words, your post will be considered spam (unless it's in the Spam Collector, of course). Any opinions?

Sounds good to me.

It would drastically reduce the spam, especially in the future where there's a chance we've gotten more members. I'm sure Null can whip up something like this, but I'm not too good with the technical aspect, so I wouldn't know.

It should be 10 characters instead if we implement this. I know some people like posting those smile only/ pic only posts so Im on the fence about it.

Exactly. It's that kind of stuff that makes me want to have this implemented. Sure, in the Spam Collector/Forum Games forum this rule wouldn't be in effect, but everywhere else it should be.

No word limit:
cool
3 word limit:
lol cool. filr
If anything at all we'd have to go to characters.

I don't think implementing a hard rule is the way to go.
The percentage of posts on this forum that are under 3 words is very, very small, and generally gets caught by the moderators anyway.
You can have very constructive posts with under 10 words, in fact, 20% of the posts in this thread have less than 10 words.
I think we're far better going with the current system of moderators than making a hard cap rule about it.

That would increase spam. Like if I wanted to post something simple I might say
Sweet
but adding that would make me put
SWEET!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!

That's only if we make it a character limit... I'm talking about a three word limit.
Besides, if they add more "words" like "lol" and etc. that would be considered spam as well.

But then you're not really accomplishing much, because the spam posts are still there and the moderators still need to go in and remove them.

What about instead of having a word cap, the moderators are notified if a post has less than 3 words. I think that would keep people from putting filler words, because most people won't know that mods are notified.

As the system is already, the mods are notified every time a post is reported. All you have to do is report it, and we get notified with links and everything.

Oh, right. Everyone, make sure we do this!

Okay.*Post reported*
Anyway, can I have a link to the page that shows who moderates what?

I can't find it, but Null will probably come online shortly and say "it's right here dumbass". As far as I can remember, Null and Thomas have ultimate power over everything, Coyote and Psycho have mod powers over everything, and I have mod powers over the map forums. I'm not entirely sure if that's correct though.

I'm fine, as Denominator said, with our current system. For instance, I know someone is putting together a giant screentage for the site, and all he needed was permissions. I commented on that thread saying "Go for it." which is all he needed, and that's not considered spam.

Null is really busy at work today so you will have to wait for the "Here it is dumbass" comment, but from what he has told me, you are correct Denominator.

Does it really matter who moderates what? Just report it and the end of your involvement.

It's not for that. I'm interested in looking at Retired Staff.

I believe right now it's just Morphine and Woozy. I can't think of anyone else. Most of the people that are dedicated to the site now are either rather recent arrivals or have been dedicated for a long time.

Is he retired staff or is he just senior member?
Look at that. He is retired staff too.
I dont like this. Sometimes, one word is all that is needed. For example, if somebody asked you a question, you could simply respond "Yes". You might say that it belonged in a visitor message, but then the question would appear un-answered to the rest of the people viewing the thread.

It's easy to elaborate on a simple "Yes."
"Yes, that's fine."
"Yes it is."
"Yes, I'm sure."
"Yes, it's green."
"Yes, it's one-sided."
"Yes, I like cheeseburgers."

Yeah, but what's wrong with simply saying yes? Absolutely nothing. So why should it be not allowed?

I'm sure by now you've heard of a "complete sentence," right?
They make you do this all the time in school, and for good reason. ex:
Are you Caucasian?
Yes
or
Yes, I am Caucasian.

I'm not saying there is anything wrong with that, I am just saying there is no reason for it to be against the rules (filtered) to not do it.

Look, I don't agree with the 3 word limit either, but how often are you actually just saying "Yes" or "No?" Is it even hard then to make it a complete sentence? It really isn't hard to add an extra word or two. Its not that its against the rules to say "Yes" or "No" or "Maybe" but there is no difficulty in typing a few extra words anyway. I encourage you to scavenge the forums for posts that have less three words.

What your tone a little, be a little more explanatory and less attacking...
Anyways, I think what we have here is fine we just need to encourage post reporting through site updates and through general community speak... if we do that then things will be fine... also again VMing and PMing users that commit to spam is an option as well... if a user doesn't listen to someone else to fix their spam it's easy to report it to one of the mods/admins...
