Something that has become a new trend in the good 'ol shoutbox is finding the color of your username. To do this, simply type in TEXT, filling in "username" with your actual username, and "TEXT" with the text you want to use.

So, when I type in my username I get this color.
Crazy, right? Who would have thought that my name would be assosciated with the color blue?

That only works if the colour actually shows up, because it auto-changes from [color=username] to [color=colorcode]. For those of us that it doesn't work for, it doesn't change.

For those that don't get how this is working, you have to understand Color Codes and Hexadecimal values.


We work in a Base 10 number system by default.
0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 <- 10 numbers available for each digit

Computers work in binary, which is Base 2.
0, 1

Reading a bunch of 1s and 0s gets tedious, so the numbers are converted into something more human readable, but yet easily converted back and forth. You would think that Base 10 would be the way to go, since we look at that all of the time, but 10 isn't a power of 2, so it isn't easily converted; therefore we move up to the next possible number set, hexadecimal, or Base 16.

Given that we don't have 16 numbers to work with, letters are added into the number set.
0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, A, B, C, D, E, F
Where A = 10, B = 11, etc.


All color codes come in these hexadecimal values, with two digits for each base color (red, green & blue), so there are 6 digits. That means that a color code will look something like this:

000000 <- Black
FFFFFF <- White
AA0000 <-Dark Red
007788 <- Teal
etc.


So, now where do the colors come from in your name?
They come from the Hexadecimal values located within.

I figured out a subtle pattern, but I'm not 100% sure why it happens exactly the way it does.
Basically, it reads every other set of 2 characters (letters and numbers) in your name and tries to use those as a color value. If one of the letters isn't a Hexadecimal digit, then it is replaced by a 0. And once it hits 6 digits, it is done.


Let's look at my name as an example:

If you have a space, you need to remove it for the color code to work:

Which leaves...

We only need the first 6 characters....

Now we convert to Hexadecimal, exchanging any non hex-digits for 0s.

N -> 0
U -> 0
P -> 0
A -> A
M -> 0
E -> E

That gives us our final value:

000A0E

And that is my color code.
