Two things here and I dont know if they can even be done but if they could it would be cool.

1.) Is it possible to make a gametype BB code, you know like the maps but for gametypes.

2.) On the homepage, where there are recent maps, could you also add gametypes into that place.

This is a good idea. I'm sure Null can work something out for the gametype thing. Maybe we could have the new Gametypes section off at the left side. If we had it in with the maps, someone might not be on for a day and miss a map/ gametype. It would get full a lot. At XForgery, we like to focus on all Halo 3 creations. Not just maps. Good suggestions. Keep 'um coming.

Yep, the reason that we never did anything like this in the past is because we never had thumbnails for Gametypes before. Now that I finally added that, it is far more feasible.

I can easily add the BBCode, but the real question is how you guys think we should handle the frontpage. It would be incredibly easy to just add it into the current Top 5 Newest thing we have now, but like it was said, gametypes are much fewer than maps so they won't stay up very long comparatively.

You could have them listed as ForgeHub lists maps, in a small box on the left side. That way it's just a little bit more discreet.

Personally, if we are trying to make Gametypes and Maps equal, then that wouldn't be the way to go.

I think this would be a good idea. While i don't use the BB Code for thumbs, instead I do the classical hyperlinks, but I still think this could be useful to some people though. Unless it is a piece of code or something that just takes up room and does no good then I say why not?

I agree with Null maps and gametypes should be equal so both need to be featured the same way. Can we set one or two of the five slots dedicated towards recent gametypes and the rest towards maps? I'm leaning more towards one...

In addition to this, and I'm sure you have thought of it Null, is utilizing the tag system and adapting the map search into a content search with radio buttons for Map/Gametype. And when you click it it dynamically changes the results. With the switch you would set some form objects to invisible and the ones for say gametypes to visible, keeping the fields that they have in common (like creator). Also any future additions to the form for search filtering or what not (like a "Features" button or a "Randomize" button or a "Least Viewed" button... that last one is for people who deserve some more attention for their map) would work great for both of them.

That is quite a bit of work for you Null, but let's see what people think about that as a feature shall we? :)

There is no good way to set up one slot for just gametypes.

And yes, I thought of doing that as well, but every time I've asked people (yourself included) for things to filter on in a gametype, they drew a blank.
Besides filtering on the Root Gametype and possibly Number of Players, or the extreme Exact Gametype Settings, there are no good ways to search on a gametype.

There's no need for a Least Viewed Button when you can sort them by the number of views almost just as easily.

Well me and AZN were talking and we believe that with the increase in XFOG's this last week, that we might start to see more detailed and interesting game types. Maybe we won't have to worry if people start paying attention to them more.

I could think of a few.

Competative, Casual, Minigame, Honnor Rules, No Honnor Rules, Team Game, Free For All, Large Party, Small Party, Medium Party, Special Maps Required, Works For Default Maps, Objective Based, Killing Based, Protecting Based, Vehicle Based, Survival Based, Number of Compatible Maps, Complex Rules, Simple Rules, One Sided (Take Turn Games like 1 flag or blast off), No Turns, Number of Rounds, Short Game, Long Game, XFOG Game, Recent Game... That's all I can think of at the moment but it's no blank what do you think.

Well what's wrong with incorporating the base of what we have and adding what we can later. Maybe Gametypes will only be made for sorting via base gametype/feature/XFOG/creator/etc... if we think of something later then we can add that later. Doing it now before waiting for that moment when we find an ingenious way to sort it will take away alot of the overhead that would be caused when we have to go through all of the gametypes to fit them with new tags. Starting with a base and building it up is the best way and when people actually have an application to sort with and search then they will automatically come up with "Hey wouldn't it be cool if we could search be _______". It will help itself in the future Null.

And some people don't think of viewing the maps with the least attention. It's also like the toolbar. Yeah you can go into the forums and click on submit map or map search etc... but this not only shows people what we focus on, but also makes it easier for people to do it making them more inclined to focus on what's not getting the attention it deserves...

As for the first part and not dedicating slots... that sucks... damn... lol oh wellz... someone please think of something, I'm out of ideas...

Oh and my options for similer choices would have bars that pull down menus of the like choices. The default would be set to no prefrence.

Oh and you could take the hompage map viewing system and put it in the custom gametypes forum?

We want to be able to give people that make gametypes the same recognition that people that make maps get... hence we want it on the front page somewhere...

Canadians360
06-14-2009, 02:59 PM
Ok what if we had the new gametypes have bars with their general symbols behind them? They would be just as wide as the map bb code images but not as tall. The maps title would go over the image in white. This would show the type of gametype and map name. This would be under the featured content as a very nice looking side tab.

PS: would this be enough categories/things to search for, to make a gametype search?

Lol! How did I miss this!
It's weird that I thought of almost the exact same thing a few days later.

The only way I can think for Maps and Gametypes to appear equal on the front page, would be to have Gametypes under the Maps.

We could also have a vertical list on the side. It would not be as equal, but the gametypes would be up there much longer. That might balance it out.

These are some great suggestions Canadians... We should definitely debate what we can categorize gametypes as... cuz they would have to go into the gametype post generator as well...

A lot of those are very narrow categories and/or overlapping.

We could split them into sections, and then add ticky boxes for whatever gametypes the map supports, similar to what we have now, but more detailed.

Actually most don't really over lap. For example king of the hill could be scored based on kills. Keep in mind I was just typing what came to me. I know it would need to be trimmed that's fine.

Agreed, and these categories will give a more in-depth description of what the gametypes are like. I especially like the short, medium, or long gameplay one...

And things like one sided would be better called as "Symmetrical" "Asymmetrical". I would sort them out right now, but I have to go back to work soon...

What I meant is that you can have multiple descriptions from that list for one gametype.

For example, you could have a gametype that uses Minigame, Honour Rules, Free For All, Small Party, Special Maps Required, Objective Based, Vehicle Based, Complex Rules, No Turns, Short Game. All those can be used to describe a single gametype without excluding each other. So you'd need the ticky boxes because how can you pick one describing factor over another?

Whew that was all on itouch sorry it took so long. I took a few things that I said before like vehicle based you may want to add racing but that's still kind of a mini game. Since honor rules aren't posted in maps I figured it might be best mentioned in the games thread. This search only has two more search options than the map search which I think is very good. I was debating splitting up rounds and time for now CTRL click is the way I like a bit better. Any suggestions and or support here?

GodlyPerfection

Rounds and Time Frame should be split up...

Game Size should be Party Size...

Supported maps should be two check boxes, one for specialized maps one for default maps. You never really know how many maps may support it and that number can change.

Scoring doesn't look right, but I don't really know how we would pull that off...

Oh and party size should not have a tiny category... small is 1-6 players, medium is 7-12 and large is anything over that.

1) Consider it done
2) No Problem
3) Still need a no prefrence for a search so ill keep it a bar but same idea
4) Thats the best way I can think of right now Ill keep thinking.
5) Sorry have to disagree, that was straight from the map search. Which has tiny. So for comaptability and simplicity it remains the same. (could be usefull if you made a feature such as recomended maps for my gametype or vise versa)

Thanks for all the feed back AZN

Finally added the Gametype BBCode, now that we have thumbnails.
Works the same way as the Map one.
