Issue One: Parts of a Switch
Switches come in all shapes, sizes, and uses. There are 3 criteria that define a switch. These are Trigger, Mechanics, and Purpose. When you put these 3 together, you have your switch.
Now, let's go more in detail of these three things. To do this let's look at the slide door:
Trigger
The trigger is the part of the switch that activates it. The part that must be manually hit or activate and is seen by the Halo player.

In this case, it is a custom powerup. It is used to represent an automatic door that senses proximity.
There are many triggers that have been discovered already. There are explosions, powerups, turrets, pallets, vehicle RB flips, regenerators and many more.
Mechanism
The mechanism is the meat of your switch. It is the part that makes it work. It is the circuitry of your light switch in your house. It connects the trigger to the purpose.

In the slide door, the fusion coil blows up a grav lift to open the door. Though, mechanisms can be much more or much less complicated.
A few examples of mechanisms are destruction of grav lifts, min/max, pressure, wires, and many more undiscovered possibilities.
Purpose
This is the reason you are making your switch. It is the most important part of the whole thing.

In this case, the purpose is to open a door. Why not just have it open you ask, that is because it will isolate game play from room to room. It is activated cover.
The purpose of a switch can be to open a door, close a bomb plant point, take you to the next floor of a building, or even hurt your enemies or you.
Categorization
The three parts of the switch can help us, as a community, sort out our creations. The label consists of 3 parts:
trigger-mechanism-purpose
So, let's try it with the slide door:
powerup-explosion-door
Now, to see why you use these words ask yourself these questions:
Trigger: What am I doing to activate it?
Mechanism: How does it work?
Purpose: What do you call what happens?
What do you do with this new name? Put that in the thread description, then everyone will know the basics of the switch and it will be easier for everyone to understand.
Thank you for your time. I hope this helps with understanding switches. See you next time with Issue 2, "Basics of Triggers!"
