Hoarders is a new standard gametype created by two of the best gametype creators out there, GodlyPerfection and Sotha Sil156. The goal is to hoard skulls until the end of the round in order to score points. Because you don't know how many skulls each person has, you are always gambling what you have in order to improve your chances of being in the lead. The game encourages stealthy gameplay with the addictive feel of gambling what you have to get more. Read on for a video of gameplay, screenshots, and the download for the gametype and some maps.

Gameplay

Hoarders is a game that gives the true gambling feel to players. All players run around with good active camo as a trait. Each player takes pretty much one shot to kill with Sniper Rifles and Assault Rifles. There are 3 rounds at 3 minutes a piece. The drop (collection) point for the skulls, however, does not spawn until 10 seconds before the end of the round and it covers the entire map. The goal is to collect and hoard skulls until the drop point spawns and to have the most total skulls at the end of 3 rounds. The catch is that there are no waypoints over players telling how many skulls they have, so you never know if you are in the lead or not. So if you have 5 skulls do you camp and play it safe until the drop point spawns, or do you risk the 5 skulls you have to go hunt for more to improve your chances of winning? When they have no skulls, players have normal radar to help them find others, but once they do have skulls, their radar disappears to make camping more difficult. Players also have limited evade to help them get in and out of an area with skulls in it. Use your evade wisely... you show up on radar whenever you evade and your camo is slightly lessened. You may think that you can just camp out, but how do you know if you are going to win? When you have no skulls you have to go hunt for some. And when you have few, you risk not having the most... so you are always encouraged to stay active. Here's a preview of a single round of Hoarders to help you get the feel for it:

Tactics

Wanna get the edge up on the competition? Here are some tips to help you become the ultimate predator. Don't always race out to get skulls when you see them. You never know who may be watching the same skulls. On the flip side you can use skulls as a trap and lure unsuspecting victims to not only increase the number of skulls in the area, but to also strip them of all their skulls. Toggle crouch is almost a must as it is typically a crazy idea to run around standing up since you have less camo because of how fast you are moving. Watch and avoid special effects and glass reflections. It is easier to spot camo players that are on water, in front of smoke, or sitting in front of glass. Don't be afraid to execute a full assassination to rub your dominance in your opponent's face. You return to camo as you are executing the assassination. Also don't always feel like you need to evade to get out of a dangerous area. Sometimes it is better to just slowly move around while you are being shot at. Because evade lessens camo, it could possibly make it easier for your opponents to hit you. Remember that 10 skulls is max and you should probably not be hunting since you can't get anymore. Of course it doesn't hurt to rob others of their skulls. Use those last 10 seconds as your bragging time and have fun.

Setup your own maps

Making maps work for Hoarders is easy. All you have to do is make a drop point that does not spawn at start and has a 180 second respawn time. Make sure it covers the whole map. As a tip, you can just lower the radius, top, and bottom stats to their minimum and then lower it one more time to get the maximum number of 109.9... or something like that. It's easy to make any map compatible with Hoarders. We have found that for beginning players, flatter maps like Powerhouse and Asylum work best. However if you want to mix things up a bit give more vertical and open based maps a try for some crazy cause... Countdown and Reflection work great for veteran players. Feel free to setup any of the default maps or any maps period to work for Hoarders, to give your custom group some new environments to hunt in.

Snipers are rather effective point blank.

Beat downs work too.

Assault Rifles, on the other hand, take a couple seconds to kill.

Gotta hoard those skulls.

Takes a bit of explaining to new players beforehands, but still a solid, fun gametype. I'm definetly trash at it though. : P

This is pretty fun if you have enough people, otherwise it's just boring. I'm a bit curious why you don't have the Hoarders version of Swordbase up for download..

We (though mostly AZN, considering he is the one who has tested on all of the different variants) decided upon the four maps that we felt were the most fun.

If you would like any specific map, feel free to make it yourself. It certainly is easy enough to do. The process is outlined in the post. Also, I might add, I'm sure Godly would appreciate it if you would please use the description "[Base Map Name] variant made to work with the Hoarders gametype. ReachingPerfection.com"

If you would like to share it, upload it to your fileshare. Post the link here, and I'll put it in the post.

This just proves you can come up with new and amazing gametypes in Reach.

Great job guys.

Have you tried this with the hologram ability? I feel like that would play really well and fun.
The gametype you have now sounds very interesting though, i like the risk vs reward system you have set up.
Also have you made any forgeworld maps for this? I think it would be cool to make a dark map with lots of hallways, but then again its just an idea haha.

Hey, sweet! I made three action shots. Mk V helmet FTW!

Anyway, fun game. Either you love it or hate it - some people just don't like stealth, but those that love it (or tolerate it) can have great fun with this game. There's nothing better than watching a guy through your scope, pondering whether you should go for that tenth skull... then you get shot in the face by another guy who was wondering the same thing. Of course, this scenario leads to a lulzy "HOLY CRAP SKULLS" fest, where everyone dies in the name of grabbing those precious, precious skulls.

Thanks for posting this over here Sotha. ;) Btw, we made the front page of halo.bungie.org: Hoarders (http://halo.bungie.org/news.html?item=31545). You can thank me later. lol... Note that I didn't write that. I would have put your name on the front page if I posted it. Your name is definitely in the post several times though. :P I guess that slightly violates my Underground code. bah... rules need to be broken sometimes and Sotha deserves the attention.

Sotha it was an honor working with you and this goes to show how powerful the new Reach system really is.

We have not made any maps that I am aware of yet.

The hologram feature does sound interesting though.

"A friend"? Thanks anyway though. It's frustrating to be reduced to that, but it's not like I can expect my name not to be outshone by yours. Some people just need to learn what coforging is. XD

Sorry... I wish I could fix that. They just know me from the forge lessons. They front page every single one that I post now. At least it goes to a post that mentions your name a lot and it links back to RP that mentions your name as well. You may not be on the front page, but a lot of people are still seeing your name. I've already gotten over a hundred hits from it. So over a hundred of people have followed the post back to RP. Probably tons more that haven't followed the link that have still seen your name.

HBO is one of the top Halo News sites. They've been around since before Halo 1 came out.

It's okay. I was just kidding for the most part.

So reception has been good so far?

What do you think of the idea with the holograms rather than evade?

So far the reception has been mixed. As with most innovative gametypes the mechanics give the impression of a bad gametype. Camo results in a slow camping based game to most apparently. It is hard to clear up that fact, because it truly is a gametype that you need to play in order to get the full experience. Oh well, remember that everything you make is an investment for the future. Conquest didn't get popular for almost a year since it was released. All in good time. We may be sitting on the new Conquest, but we won't know until months from now.

Btw, Ardly is working on a crazy layout and map for Hoarders that involves setting up the map with slight inclines so that skulls drop into something like "sewers" that drain the skulls into an area underneath the map. Using a man cannon/grav lift to shoot it through the top of a pipe. This would result in dropped skulls being dispersed throughout the map instead of just sitting in the area that someone died. I thought it was a pretty interesting idea.

As far as Holo goes, we will never know until we actually try it right?

With camo being an active trait, holo doesn't seem like that bad an idea, though it might promote more camping in the name of ambushing. If you can sit in a corner and draw guys to you by sending a hologram out but remain invisible, then you'll sit in a corner rather than hunt down people.

But then again, I'm speculating. It'd be interesting to try out.

Yes. That is true. It does seem to be getting a better reception than most of the other games I've posted though I don't know if that is because your name is on it, or because you're just a better writer than I. Regardless, the most frustrating area I've noticed has been those of Forge Hub, considering that I have no support to deal with their ignorance, not that I really care too much about their reactions anyway.

The new maps does sound rather interesting though. Not only would it work against the idea of camping skulls, it would (as I imagine it) create a need to go out and get new skulls before they roll away, which should be interesting (as well as just seeing random skulls rolling around the map). I would love to see it.

And I'll possibly test Holohoarders with the new version of Jupiter Jazz tonight. And as far as Jupiter Jazz goes, I think I'm only going to post it with the few gametypes that work well, rather than trying to get all of them to do so. I'm thinking Space Havens, Space Lasers, Space Slayer, Space Balls, and the Stockpile one.
