"In addition, Sketch has been hard at work to bring a massive community Forge competition to fruition, where we'll pit our finest Forgers against one another in one of several broad map categories for fame, glory, and some truly fabulous prizes. Of course, the ultimate prize will be getting your map into matchmaking where we can all partake in your design genius, so if you want to get an early jump on the competition you should start thinking about building maps that would fit into the existing Halo: Reach ecosystem. Team Slayer is a great place to start, but we’ll also be looking at maps well suited for Invasion, Big Team Battle, Team Objective, Race, and several other playlist options we already have on offer.

More on this front soon, including map design primers and Forge tutorials. Stay Tuned™.

Make sure you get working on any maps you have planned!

Seven Halo: Reach Limited Edition Xbox 360 Consoles are up for grabs! (Note: Wireless Headset Not Included)
Let's face it - Forge is a very powerful yet woefully under-documented feature in Reach. Visualizing a sweet map is only part of the equation, you'll still need to abide by some specific parameters to make your maps play properly for a specific gametype.

There are currently two different articles availalbe on Bungie.net that could serve as useful resources in your quest for Forge Fame:

Cable's Forge Required Objects Guide (http://www.bungie.net/Forums/posts.aspx?postID=49035808)
Forge Invasion Guide (http://www.bungie.net/News/content.aspx?type=topnews&cid=28649)

You'll also find a wealth of information out there in the Reach and Forge community though, this being a contest, you may find help a bit less forthcoming than usual.

Now for the official rules and details.

Please read very closely and pay careful attention. You're only eligible to win if you meet the criteria below and follow the specified requirements for submission.

Good luck and happy Forging!

BUNGIE FORGETACULAR 2010 CONTEST OFFICIAL RULES

You must read these Official Rules before entering the Bungie Forgetacular Contest (the "Promotion"). All entrants (“Entrants”) agree to be bound by these Bungie Forgetacular Contest Official Rules (the “Official Rules”).

No purchase necessary. The Promotion is void where any aspect of the Promotion is prohibited by law or where registration, bonding or translation is required.

Bungie is hosting the Bungie 2010 Forgetacular Contest where Entrants will have an opportunity to build and submit Halo: Reach Forge World maps in one of seven distinct categories. The winner of each category will take home a brand new Limited Edition Halo: Reach Xbox 360 console in addition to the fame that comes from winning and with potentially having their winning creation added to matchmaking for millions of players to experience.

Each category represents a specific game-type and has specified requirements to be eligible:

INVASION (“INV” )– A custom map that is built specifically for the Spartan vs. Elite “Invasion” game-types. The map must be optimized for 12 players (6 vs. 6) and support both “Invasion Slayer” and a 3-tiered “Invasion (Objective)” variants.
RACE (“RACE”) – A map that is designed to support Race and/or Rocket Race game-types. The map must be designed to work with 8 to 12 total players.
INFECTION (“INFECT”) – Map specially designed to support Infection and Safe Havens game-types for 8 to 16 players.
BIG TEAM BATTLE (“BTB”) – A larger map designed to support 16 players. Must support Slayer/Team Slayer at a minimum.
TEAM SLAYER (“TS”) - A map that’s expertly designed for 4 vs. 4 Team Slayer competitive play.
SYMMETRICAL ARENA (“SYMM”) – A symmetrical arena designed primarily for Slayer and Team Slayer for up to 8 players (4 vs. 4 / 8-player FFA).
CAPTURE THE FLAG (“CTF”) – Designed to support 1-Flag or 2-Flag games, symmetrical or a-symmetrical layout. 4 vs. 4.

How to Participate/Eligibility

Starting at 6:00 a.m. Pacific Time (PT), October 14, 2010, and continuing through 11:59 p.m. Pacific Time (PT), November 28, 2010 (the “Promotion Period”), create a custom Halo: Reach Forge World map for one of the seven categories and save all films, screenshots and digital files to your Bungie.net file share. All files should be grouped into a corresponding “Set” on Bungie.net, and the map and files should be tagged “CONTEST-XXX” where “XXX” is the game-type it was designed for. For example, “CONTEST-INV” or “CONTEST-CTF” or “CONTEST-TS.”

Entrants must also send an email to contest@bungie.com that includes: your real name (i) your gamer-tag; (ii) your Bungie.net profile name; (iii) a valid contact email address for you; and (iv) a link to your files on Bungie.net. The subject of the email should be "Forgetacular-XXX" where "XXX" represents the category the entrants map is being submitted for and matches the file share set name/tag. (i.e. "CTF", "SYMM", etc..) No entries will be accepted after the end of the Promotion Period.

Entrant must also supply a valid email address as part of the registration process and such other identification information as is requested. Entrant must have a valid Xbox LIVE account and a valid Halo: Reach file share for the duration of the Promotion Period. Each Entrant must be an individual who is a legal resident of the United States and at least 17 years of age. If the Entrant is not at least the age of majority in his or her jurisdiction of residence for the duration of the Promotion Period, by entering the Entrant represents that his or her parent or legal guardian have agreed to the entry and have read and agreed to these Official Rules. Entrants must be in good standing with Sponsor, the Reach community and Xbox Live, as determined in Sponsor’s and its designees’ sole discretion. Sponsor, in its sole discretion, shall determine the eligibility of Entrants (including within a category) and the time of entry.

Entries must adhere to the following requirements:

Entries must provide a hyperlink to Entrant’s submission files in their Halo: Reach/Bungie.net file share;
Entries must be original (e.g., no remakes or rip-offs) and exclusively created and owned by the Entrant, and Entrant must have all rights necessary to submit the entry;
Entries must specify for which one of the seven distinct categories it was submitted. Entries may not be submitted for more than one category, although Sponsor reserves the right to judge entry in a category other than the one specified by Entrant.
Entries (including all corresponding file(s)) must be available in the Entrant’s Halo: Reach file share at time of submission and remain there through 12/6/10. Entries: (i) must include at least 3 screenshots; (ii) must include at least 1 saved film that demonstrates the specified game-type being played correctly on the map; and (iii) create a “set” on Bungie.net to group all related files together.
Entries must not, in the sole discretion of the Sponsor, contain any -blam!-ly explicit, profane, disparaging, libelous or other inappropriate content; and
Entries must not, in the sole discretion of Sponsor, contain any commercial content that promotes any product or service.

Sponsor reserves the right to reject any entry for any reason.

Employees, independent contractors, officers, and directors of Sponsor, Microsoft or their affiliates, subsidiaries, advertising, promotion, and fulfillment agencies, and legal advisors, the judges, and the immediate family members and persons living in the same household of such persons, are not eligible to participate or to win a prize in the Promotion.

By registering for or participating in the Promotion, Entrant agrees to abide by and be bound by these Official Rules and any decision Sponsor or its designees make regarding any matters relating to the Promotion. Entrants who do not comply with the Official Rules are not eligible to compete or win a prize. Sponsor reserves the right to disqualify from the Promotion, and any future contest or other promotion conducted by Sponsor, and to prosecute to the fullest extent permitted by law, any Entrant who, in Sponsor’s reasonable suspicion, tampers with any of Sponsor’s sites, the entry process, the Promotion, violates these Official Rules, or acts in an unsportsmanlike or disruptive manner. In the event of disqualification of a winner, Sponsor may replace the winner with the next runner-up at the sole discretion of the Sponsor. Entrants may submit more than one map entry (including to multiple categories) but each Entrant may win no more than one prize.

By participating in the Promotion, each Entrant grants to Sponsor and Microsoft an exclusive, worldwide, fully paid, royalty-free, perpetual, irrevocable, transferable license to reproduce and use (including the right to make derivative works of) the entry and any information submitted in connection with the entry, in and in connection with Sponsor’s, Microsoft’s and their designees’ products, services and advertising (including, without limitation, making map submissions available for Halo: Reach Xbox LIVE matchmaking.) Each participating Entrant hereby waives his or her moral rights in any such entries and information (and hereby recognizes that Sponsor and Microsoft may modify submissions for future use), and hereby warrants that any such entries and information are original with Entrant and do not infringe upon the copyrights, trademarks, rights of privacy, publicity or other intellectual property or other rights of any person or entity. If the entry contains any material or elements that are not owned by Entrant and/or which are subject to the rights of third parties, Entrant represents he or she has obtained, prior to submission of the entry, any and all releases and consents necessary to permit use and exploitation of the entry by Sponsor and Microsoft in the manner set forth in the Official Rules without additional compensation, including, without limitation, likeness releases for any person whose name, and/or likeness appears in the entry.

Each Entrant warrants that the entries and information submitted do not contain information considered by Entrant's place of business or any other third party to be confidential, and that the entries and information submitted do not violate or infringe the rights of any third parties or violate any laws or regulations. Each Entrant agrees that he or she shall have no recourse against Sponsor for any alleged or actual infringement or misappropriation of any proprietary right in an Entrant’s entry.

By participating in the Promotion, Entrant consents to Sponsor’s use of his or her name, photograph and/or likeness, address, voice, and statements made by or attributed to him or her, in perpetuity, in any and all media now known or hereafter developed (including, without limitation, print, broadcast, and Internet), for all business purposes including advertising and promotional activities without additional compensation, notice or approval, unless prohibited by law.

Contest Categories and Judging

Sponsor or its designees will review all eligible entries and select the winners of each category based on the equally-weighted criteria identified below. Sponsor will not provide feedback, support or response to any Entrants regarding their submission.

Eligible map submissions will be judged based on:

Game-type Support

Does the map function for the game-type(s) as necessary? Are all required objects and systems in place to successfully play a game?

Fun-Factor

Is the map fun to play on? Is the spaces fun to navigate through? Do the weapons, spawn and layout promote a positive game experience? Is the map balanced and fair for the given game-type?

Performance

Does the map suffer from any negative visual or performance issues?

Originality / Creativity

Because the Promotion is a contest of skill, winning is dependent on the quality of submissions received.

Finality of Decisions.
All decisions of the Sponsor, including as to judging, are final and binding in all matters relating to this Promotion.

Prizes.
There will be one grand prize winner for each category. The grand prize consists of a Halo: Reach limited edition Xbox 360 console signed by the Bungie team. ALL COSTS NOT SPECIFICALLY ENUMERATED IN THESE OFFICIAL RULES (INCLUDING TAXES) ARE THE SOLE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE WINNER. Winners may be required to provide a Social Security number or Taxpayer ID prior to the awarding of any prize. All prizes will be awarded and are not transferable. No substitutions are permitted, except Sponsor reserves the right to substitute a prize of equal or greater monetary value to the prizes.

Notification of Winners.
Each winner will be attempted to be notified on or about December, 6, 2010. Each winner will be notified by email, phone, regular mail and/or within the game and must sign and return an declaration of eligibility and compliance with these Official Rules, a publicity/liability release (unless prohibited by law), and any other requested documents within the time period stipulated in the documents. Failure to comply with this requirement may result in disqualification. Any notification returned as undeliverable may result in disqualification. In the event of a dispute about the identity of an Entrant, entries will be declared submitted by the Authorized Account Holder of the email address submitted at time of entry. “Authorized Account Holder” is defined as the natural person who is assigned to an email address by an Internet access provider or online service provider or other organization that is responsible for assigning email addresses for the domain associated with the submitted email address. Asylum is really broken. The Cage is actually really good for Slayer gametypes. Paradiso does kind of blow though.

Imma submit Essence. It plays AMAZINGLY.

Also, the Cage is really a very good map, I enjoy it a lot for Slayer. Asylum and Paradiso are meh....

The only issue with Asylum is that needs fixing is they need to add soft kill barriers on top of the buildings where the sniper is at. Other than that, it plays fine.

The line of sight from sniper to sniper is what breaks the map for me. If one team has a sniper at one of the sniper spawns, the only way for a team to access the enemy team's base is by taking another route. All of these other routes are on the ground level and are at an extreme disadvantage from the sniper because of how limited the structural cover is. The only safe route is through the shotgun tunnel, and you'll show up on the sniper's radar if you go through there.

It's by no means the worst map ever, there are just a couple things that need fixing, what you said included. All one would need to do to greatly improve Asylum would be to block the LOS from sniper to sniper through the use of some block or something in the center room.

I think I may actually have a chance with this, only if Gateway does not get sumbitted for either Team Slayer or CTF. Not to sound cocky or anything, but Essence really does play really well just not as good as gateway. :D

I may make a Gateway remake and send it in for TS and CTF but I'm unsure, I'm making a map for invasion so I'll be submitting that, but if I can submit two maps then a Gateway remake will be going in aswell.

GodlyPerfection
10-14-2010, 09:47 PM
Keep in mind that CTF is 4v4 CTF not BTB ctf. The only BTB requirement is that it plays Team Slayer/Slayer... Hmmm... does that mean we need to support 16 man FFA? Damn. I'll figure that out. I'm going BTB since there are very few forgers that understand how to make a good BTB map. I've gotta look out for the likes of Cosmic Rick. Expect a lot of competition in Slayer, Symmetrical, and CTF. And skill wise Invasion is going to be the hardest category as people are just learning what makes it fun.

cory21
10-15-2010, 04:44 PM
I've had a nice design for a BTB map that's inspired from Culmination, that looks like it actually stands a fighting chance in the BTB category. Ive just got to get started on it...

I've also got a nice 4v4 map which I just finished and is ready for testing. I'll put a preview up later tonight for you guys to check it out.

Also, quick random question: does selecting 'delete all' for an FX delete all FXs on the map?

EDIT: 2nd more on-topic question: What the difference between Team Slayer and Symmetrical Arena? Is TS strictly for 4v4, while SA is 4v4 and FFA?

RPAL
10-15-2010, 04:59 PM
SYMMETRICAL ARENA (“SYMM”) – A symmetrical arena designed primarily for Slayer and Team Slayer for up to 8 players (4 vs. 4 / 8-player FFA).
