I've already seen a ton of thread complaining about the inaccurate bumpers used to raise and lower objects in forge. I don't like the new system much either. But i have an great solution to the problem:
Use the bumpers to get the object close to the place you want it (within 5 inches or so). Then you hit the bumper, quickly followed by the A button to release your grip. Its kinda of like the method used to dummy and object, except with the bumper. This takes practice. If you get the hang of it, you will be very accurate, and much quicker than using the nudge system.
Give it a try. You feel pretty pro once you master it (in addition to cutting your forging time and frustration level down).

Or use the nudge.. If you get it semi-exact (like almost exact) then you press edit coordinates it sets it to the nearest tenth usually making it exact to the object next to it.

If you forge a bit more, you'll know what I'm talkin bout. Not all items will line up using the nudge system. This way is much quicker when you find yourself if that situation. Trust me, I just forged a whole map using this trick. Its handy!

I have found myself doing this, just to get the pieces perfectly level.

Usually clicking in with the left thumbstick then lowering it will cut the lowering speed by like half. Then just move it into place with the left thumbstick manually. I've been fine doing that.

I know that they don't always line up, but that's it you are switching objects and stuff.. And I already have a finished map and have made like 4 other test ones...

The thumbstick doesn't affect vertical movement, as your entire motion system is one that literally revolves around the object.

I'm pretty sure he was just meaning to use the Left Thumbstick as a button (as in click it down), which puts you into a 'precision' mode where the movements are a lot more fine.

I meant like while clicking in on the left thumbstick Raise and lower slowly, but sometimes you will move the object forward or to a side because you're clicking on the stick too hard so then you have to move it back slightly which is what I meant by move it manually. I see how you perceived that though.
