OverviewAnchorage (http://www.xforgery.com/forum/showthread.php?t=9425) by Bartoge and rifte gifle is just one of those maps that makes you shake your head and ask why someone didn’t think of this sooner. Forged to resemble an area from Batman: Arkham Asylum, this map features some of the most diversified and well-balanced gameplay I’ve seen in a long time, all while sporting a truly unique layout.
It is most certainly on the smaller side, only recommended for two teams of up to four players (and working better in smaller parties), but to that end it plays beautifully. No one team dominates the power weapons at spawn, and they are all distanced such that no one person can horde them all without some serious skill. Even then, the map’s layout lends to keeping gameplay balanced. Each piece of geometry flows almost exactly as you would expect it to, and the aesthetics are equally brilliant.
But the other striking thing about this map is something I haven’t seen in a very, very long time: a fun King of the Hill map. One of two things happens on poorer maps: one team dominates the hill, because there is entirely too much cover and not enough ways into the hill zone, or there is absolutely no cover and the game drags on because neither team can control the hill long enough to get any points. Anchorage strikes the perfect balance between these two extremes with its hills, providing a wide variety of paths into each hill, but without sacrificing some of the essential cover that makes the game worth playing. This keeps things fast-paced, and lends to some of the best KotH gameplay I’ve ever seen in a map.
So if you haven’t already, go ahead and give another download to Anchorage (http://www.bungie.net/Online/Halo3UserContentDetails.aspx?h3fileid=114061160), and be sure to congratulate Bartoge and rifte gifle on producing one of the finer maps Halo 3 has to offer.
